Reaction Paper on the movie “Tanging Yaman”
1. How is the Filipino distinct culture like morals, values and tradition being highlighted in the movie? Loleng (Gloria Romero), the family matriarch, is a devout Catholic and spends her days hearing mass and communing with her fellow faithful. Danny (Johnny Delgado), her eldest son who stays in the family home to take care of her, seems satisfied of his modest position in life. 2. During the confrontation scene of among family members during the reunion, what are some of very common Filipino traits being manifested? Long suppressed pains and resentments unravel as the three siblings argue over the prospect of selling a vast track of land left behind by the patriarch. The process also brings to surface the hurts between parents and children, a likely spectacle of the "sins of the father visiting upon the children", threatening to spill over to the third generation. The one common thing that binds them loosely together is the love that their mother holds for all of them and her grandchildren, albeit expressed in varying ways and degrees, but always equally nurturing and self-giving. 3. How are two of the most important aspects in a Filipino’s life: God and family being brought into prominence in the movie?
