Matter of Faith
In 1970, Joe La Rotonda was a 19 year old about to get married. He was working at a hose manufacturing company in Rochester, New York as an inspector. He had graduated from high school and seemed to be facing a rather mundane future. He had no interests other than having a family, and the things that most other men he knew seemed to enjoy (sports, bar hopping, cars) meant nothing to him.
Six months after getting married, the plant where he worked went out of business. Unruffled by the closing of the plant, he filed for unemployment insurance with the state. Things were fine until Joe and his wife learned that she was pregnant. Joe’s relatives were worried about the situation, but he just told them everything was under control. A few job opportunities came his way, but he ignored them to the concern of those who knew him. To the surprise of nearly everyone but Joe, he suddenly took a low-paying job with a small tank manufacturing company. Several of his earlier opportunities paid much more, but it was of no concern to him.
