Health, Safety and Nutrition • This course will address the interrelationship of health, safety and nutrition in the environment of the developing child. Stress will be placed on the prevention, and recognition of illness and injury to children in group care. Good health and nutrition practices appropriate for children will also be addressed.

Unit 1 - Health Promotion • What do you need to be healthy?

Two Components of Canada's Health Care System 1. Personal Health Care System a. Includes conventional medical service b. Movement towards complementary medical practices & social services 2. Public Health Care System a. Provides and supports a wide range of programs, such as: b. Disease surveillance and responses to outbreaks c. Advocacy for healthier public policies, improved skills and support for improved community health behaviour d. Immunization programs e. Inspection of health standards for early childhood facilities

    There are several ways to show the correlations between health, safety and nutrition. For example, children who abide by their parents rules and get the proper nutrition are less likely to fall ill or even have a broken bone. Getting all the daily recommended value of vitamins and minerals helps to build a strong immune system and strong bones in children. Therefore, the child is safe from viruses or injury. The best interests of a child are always on the mind of parents and teachers alike. Children are our future so it is natural to want to make the best decision for them until they reach the time where the responsibility can be handed over. Although it may be hard to allow children independence, we need to be confident in our ability to show through example. Teaching safety, nutrition and health, and how they are all dependent on each other. This will help build the foundation for these children to grow into happy, healthy, and confident adults (Marotz, 2009). Health, safety and nutrition need to be a consistent part of each child’s life every day. All of these elements lead a child to live a good life. “A child growing up in a loving family in which a healthy diet, safe environment, and opportunities for learning and recreation are provided is more likely to experience good health” (Marotz, 2009). Children learn best when they are healthy, safe and secure, when their individual needs are met, and when they have positive relationships with the adults caring for them. You should promote good health to prevent the spread of infections and take appropriate action when they are ill.
