HOW TO MONITOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLES DEVELOPMENT USING DIFFERENT METHODS
As mentioned earlier children and young people progress through certain milestones as they develop, it is important that these are monitored to enable plans to be put into place to encourage and support them, should they need it. There are many ways of monitoring and assessing development throughout childhood but a child’s parent or carer must first give permission. One of the most widely used methods of monitoring development is through observation, especially in younger years where the Early Years Foundation Stage is followed. Observations should be accurate so as not to hinder a child’s development and ensure the child fulfils his or her full potential. Practitioners should liaise with parents and carers and compare how the child behaves at home and in the setting.
REASONS WHY DEVELOPMENT MAY NOT FOLLOW THE EXPECTED PATTERN
Disability (see below)
Communication skills – language (verbal, sign) is an intrinsic part of intellectual development, it helps us to reason and to vocalise our thoughts and feelings, all things essential in forming relationships
Learning needs – children may need to be taken out of their groups to benefit from additional lessons.
Social reasons – children without suitable role models from whom they can imitate which can then lead to poor lifestyle decision making in the future
Cultural reasons – children from different cultures have a different perspective on what is right and what is wrong
Environmental reasons – a child who is not having their basic needs met, not being given the opportunities to receive love and affection, to feel safe or the opportunity to play.
Physical – under developed motor skills and therefore needing specialist equipment
Emotional reasons – a child who is made to feel anxious will suffer from low self-esteem and subsequently have no motivation to complete tasks and activities for fear of failure.
