An example of that technology was the model T, which was a type of car designed in the 1920s and they were all designed exactly the same. “Of all the new appliances to enter the nation’s homes during the 1920s, none had a more revolutionary impact than the radio (digital history).” The radio gave people something to do during the day when they were stuck at home. “The very first thing to go on the radio was an election night made by the radio station KDKA, the radio announcer told about 1,000 listeners that Warren Harding had beating James Cox in the race for the White House (1920s Radio).” This was an easier way for them to relay messages to people and that way everybody could hear the same news at the same time instead of several weeks later you finally get the news from a friend.…

Radio waves are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths larger than the infrared light. Like all other electromagnetic waves, they travel at the speed of light. The wavelengths can vary from the size of a football field to the size of a football. They can be produced naturally by large stars and by lightning. Man-made radio waves are used for transmitting signals and currents.…

A wireless modem is a type of modem which connects to a wireless network instead of a telephone system. When a mobile Internet user connects using a wireless modem, they're attached directly to the wireless ISP (Internet Service Provider) and can then access the Internet. Mobile phones, smartphones, and PDAs can be employed as data modems to form a wireless access point connecting a personal computer to the Internet (or some proprietary network). In this use the mobile phone is providing a gateway between the cellular service provider's data network technology and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) spoken by PCs. Almost all current mobile phone models support the Hayes command set, a standard method of controlling…

The Electrical Engineering Senior Capstone Project is intended to give each student experience in completing a sophisticated design project that spans most of the senior year. Planning, management of time, allocation of responsibility, documentation, and presentation of the results are integrated with the technical design task. The students work with one or two faculty advisors who have expertise in the project research area. The student is fully responsible for the design project, with the advisor(s) acting as guide and mentor. Each student is expected to work an eight-hour lab period each week from October through May.A common problem found in high-speed communication is inter-symbol interference(ISI).ISI occurs when a transmission interferes with itself and the receiver cannot decode the transmission correctly. For example, in a wireless communication system such as that shown in Figure 1, the same transmission is sent in all directions.…

By Renee Cassis, VP, RAB Corporate Marketing Radio For the 21st Century HD Radio™ is a new technology that enables AM and FM Radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally, a tremendous technological leap from today's familiar analog broadcasts. These digital broadcasts provide listeners with radically improved audio quality and reception and new data services. Signal fading, static, hisses, and pops are a thing of the past. Data services such as displayed song and artist information, weather and traffic alerts, and much more will revolutionize the way consumers experience AM and FM Radio. And, as always, it’s FREE. Its anticipated impact is so significant that HD Radio received top honors with CNET’s “Next Big Thing” Award at the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show. Consumers have consistently and rapidly adopted new digital technologies — CDs, MP3s, DVDs, to name a few — because of the improved quality, choice, convenience, and interactivity they provide. This consumer adoption trend shows no sign of slowing. HD Radio technology, now with the FCC's approval, can offer Radio listeners radically upgraded audio quality, along with an on-demand interactive experience and compelling new wireless data services. HD Radio technology allows broadcasters to compete on the digital playing field of the 21st century and marks the most significant advancement in Radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. HD Radio technology provides advanced data and audio services such as surround sound, multi-casting (multiple audio sources at the same dial position), on-demand audio services, store-and-replay (listeners store a Radio program for later replay), overlaying real-time traffic information on a navigational map, a “buy” button, and a host of other services. HD Radio broadcasting is picking up steam across country. To date, 2,500 U.S. Radio stations, covering all major markets and reaching 90…
