Who Moved My Cheese?”
Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson tells a story of change, of how we react to it, and the trouble we can find ourselves in when we don't follow that change. Most people are afraid of the big “C” word: Change. They deny it, resist it, and many curse it. Change is not easy and this makes us uncomfortable. This reaction paper will include a big change that has recently occurred in my career, my response to it, the administrator’s response, and how I will deal with it in my future role as an administrator. Who Moved My Cheese? is a simple story of four characters that live in a maze and are constantly looking for cheese. Two of the four characters are named Hem and Haw and are little people about the size of mice but are complex just like humans. They rely on their emotions, and experience in life to make achievements, but also like humans they can become very comfortable and be oblivious to what is happening around them. The other two characters are mice named Sniff and Scurry. They rely more on instinct and their senses to conduct everyday life. Although they are simple minded and not very smart, they do not get hung up emotionally when things work

They realized that the cheese would not last forever. When the cheese finally did disappear, Sniff and Scurry were ready and started on their journey to find new cheese. These two characters represent the people who accept change and are ready to change whenever the moments come. These people realize that change is always happening. Sniff and Scurry did find the cheese before anyone else did due to their quick judgment to look for new cheese. At the moment the cheese disappeared, Hem and Haw were both reacting similarly. Dr. Spencer Johnson wrote “The little people’s behavior was not very attractive or productive but it was understandable.” To me, this means that being mad about change is okay, even though it is not going to get you anywhere. Throughout the whole story, Hem never changed. He always believed that the cheese would be returned to Cheese Station C. He represents the people that will deny change every chance they get and will try to keep the old ways as much as possible. After some time, however, Haw did change. He learned that the cheese was not ever going to be in Cheese Station C again.…

The differences between the four characters depict each of our emotional states and how we react to change in our lives. The cheese signifies our search for success and happiness at work and in our personal lives. They live in a maze representing our surroundings, whether it is at work or home, relentlessly searching for their cheese. While the overall lesson seems almost too simple; this story carries a lot of importance concerning changes and the consequences of our reactions or lack thereof.…

The story centers around four characters who live in a Maze and the changes with which they must wrangle. The characters are two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two so-called Littlepeople (creatures the size of mice but who look and act like people today) named Hem and Haw. The plot is pretty simple. The four characters find a large cache of cheese and can live their lives without much variation: get up, go to the cheese, eat, go home, and start over the next day. This works out okay until one day the cheese is gone. Then the characters must deal with the new situation.…

The second portion goes, “…But we so often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” This quote succinctly and nicely takes the entire book and places it into a single sentence. After Haw realizes that there will be no more cheese at Cheese Station C, he laughs at himself for forgetting the endless possibilities that the maze may provide and puts his running shoes back on to explore the unknown. I believe in the past I resembled Sniff the most; I would look for a topic that seemed beneficial or on the cutting edge and pursue it relentlessly until I found my “cheese”. In my professional life, the Sub-Assembly department has completely changed. We no longer run the same processes we ran a year ago and the type of work we are doing is completely different. After a few weeks of all Team Leaders and Supervisors trying to stay hemmed in on what they used to do, we shouldered down and came to peace with our new cheese. This book would have been very appropriate for me 8 months ago when we were beginning to test the changes and implement new ideas, I believe it should be read by any person getting ready to go through a transitional phase. Perhaps this will be my daughter’s new nighttime story before her little sibling…
