What Do You Think Makes a Good Manager?
Kuznetsova Ksenia
What do you think makes a good manager? What are the main functions of a manager according to Peter Drucker?

Manager is the person who organizes and coordinates the activities of the rest of the staff. The importance of a good manager can’t be overestimated. First of all, a good manager is a leader, a respected, professional and strong-willed person who can motivate inspire and lead people. Great managers accept blame that means that they are fully responsible for their team. They understand the importance of developing – both their subordinates and themselves. In that case I think that good managers make themselves redundant. They always learn something new and acquire useful information from the outside world so as to get the right experience. A good manager is competent: he knows the job perfectly as well as the work of subordinates. Most of the time manager works in a team, so it’s vital to be friendly and sociable and have good communication skills. They have to be persuasive and to convince people to do things like forming teams even those who are responsible for performing individual jobs. Moreover good managers have empathy – the ability to step in someone else’s shoes – because they are good listeners. They are open and always ready to discuss and solve problems.
As the managers have to measure the performance of the staff they should give praise if the objectives set for the organization as a whole and for each individual member of it are being achieved. A good manager judges on merit.. So managers who regularly give praise are in much stronger position to criticize or reprimand poor performance. In that case it won’t be taken as personal dislike.
Good managers are not afraid of others people strengths. Furthermore, good managers encourage employees to use their own initiative, to take decisions on their own. This process is called empowerment. As the result decision making becomes more decentralized and less

I believe a manager should possess 3 basic traits. They are self-awareness, curiosity and independency. Let me elaborate more on this. First and foremost, in order to manage others one must first be able to understand oneself and manage themselves. To understand oneself one must be self-aware. They must know what biases they have so when it comes time to make decisions, they can make a clear concise bias free decision. Also when one is self-aware, they can keep their emotions and feelings out of the equation when deciding. Secondly, a manager should be someone who is curious because curious people will not only look at the surface but also dig deeper into the situation to find out what is actually happening. After looking at a situation from different angles, then they can try new approaches to find out if the real deal is actually what they forecast. Lastly, a manager has to be independent because they are the one who is making the crucial decisions. Many times a manager will listen to others for opinions but the final decision has to have gone through critical thinking and be made solely on the manager’s behalf.…

During my career in the healthcare field, I have worked alongside some great managers. I also had my share of a poor manager. I learned from my past experiences, and I know what traits to have in the future as manager. I believe there are four qualities a person should have to be an excellent manager. First, a manager should have a good attitude. Attitude and energy set the tone for the day. A great manager knows when to hold certain situations lightly and when to drive certain situations with a high degree of urgency. Second, manager should have the maturity; they must be able to control their emotions. They know that if they feel frustrated, it is best to go for a walk. They don’t overreact and lose they're cool in the office. The third quality manager must be flexible. Flexible manager knows it’s all about the employees. They know that each employee is different, and they should spend time getting to know each employee on their team. The last quality is making sure all employees are accountable for their action and…

Managers do have an advantage because they really don’t have to motivate someone but being a leader you have to know different techniques to getting things done in a fun or motivating way so they have to have a good imagination or be great at thinking outside the box. The manager also needs to make sure he/she has things organized so that things can be accessed easily or even dealt with easily rather than being constantly confused. Communication and organization go hand in hand for managers.…

One may have a special talent to communicate with others, verbally or non-verbally; yet, it stills requires putting forth effort. Peoples change just as trends, so managers need to know their employees, what makes them a self-starter, what agitates…

It is a manager’s job, in any organisation or business, to understand each of their staff member’s strengths and weaknesses. It is very important for a manager to mainly concentrate on the good points of their employees at Starbucks, rather than the bad- and this makes them more successful than to any managers who look at faults in their employees in other businesses.…

Managers are responsible for being a manger and a leader all rolled up into one, but it takes an effective leader to carry out the roles. A leader has to have followers that are willing to follow the quest. The manager must be able to understand the people's potential prior to placing them in a particular position within the organization so that there will be a good fit to the organization. The mangers that are staffing the positions want to be able to have individuals that can work on there own and be able to get along with others within the environment. Knowing how to be a good manager and knowing what actually makes a good manager is key to a good, positive work flow. One good quality that I believe a manager should have would be good communication skills. Making your employees feel valued will make your employees attitude towards work go a lot farther. Another good quality that a manager should have would be to provide positive feedback and recognition to their employees. Being recognized for hard work and the dedication that employees put into the company every day to keep it running smoothly will not only help with positive attitudes but will encourage less call offs and a better overall work environment. Lastly, another good quality that I believe makes a good manager is asking your employees what you can do as a manager to help make the work place better. It will help the employees feel like they are actually involved with the company and not just another individual who got hired.…
