In today’s world, a college education is the cornerstone of life. Obtaining a college degree opens many doors of opportunity. These building blocks of opportunity will help shape who I am as a person. I am building a future, striving for success, and always looking to better myself. Abraham Lincoln once said “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” I have been haunted by similar words, in my own head, for quite some time. I never finished college, yet I love to learn. I have always dreamed of completing college, owning a company, or working in an office. Now, given the opportunity, completing this degree will become my greatest achievement. Until now, I have always felt that I let myself down. I’ve always had the best intentions, but life’s unexpectedness put several roadblocks in the way of me completing a degree. I graduated high school twenty-five years ago. Since then, I have raised a family and have unfulfilling employment. Being able to attend college and complete this degree which I am embarking upon is important to me because I have matured into the person I want to be.
Success in college takes dedication, discipline, and structure. Throughout my life, I faced several challenges where I lost the dedication, discipline, and structure necessary to complete a college education. However, becoming a parent and running a household helped me regain what I once had when I was in high school. Harry A. Overstreet must have been referring to me when he stated: “The immature mind hops from one thing to another; the mature mind seeks to follow through.” Before I became a parent and learned how to manage my time wisely, I would jump from task to task and not complete them in a timely manner. Now, I complete what I set out to do!
In becoming a mature adult, I have realized the importance of hard work and dedication. It takes a

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…

COLLEGE. It's very simple seven-letter word yet it oozes with a great sort of varied meanings. When people hear or see the word COLLEGE, negative things like homeworks, thick textbooks, surprise quizzes, utterly mind-exploding exams, and the unexcusible professors come to mind. Yes, it's partly true but we all have to look at the positive side. Many successful and well-established people would say that college determines what your life is going to be. It's like the door of opportunities and the ladder to success. Others say it's a tremendous step to adulthood and to the real world. The list is endless and I could go on hours enumerating what college means to people. But what does college really mean to me alone? Twelve years ago, I envisioned school as a playground where I can run and and have fun with my classmates. When I started my elem. education, it was not difficult for me. I nvr have to stay up all night and study hard bcos I know I would still get a good grade. Everything was pretty easy back then. But when I've reached HS, I started to feel pressured and I know the lessons are becoming harder and more complex. If I wanted a high grade, I would gather books and study all my notes overnyt. That's when I realized everything was shifting from easy to difficult; everything was changing. And in my last yr in HS, people started to talk abt college. I often as myself "Wat do I want 2 be in the future?". I imagined myself as a teaher, biologist, policewoman, and an engineer. Do I want 2 go 2 college? Of course, I do! No matter how hard college is, as people wud say, I will face it willingly and w/ a strong heart bcos I know it would make something good out of myself. I will do what I want and give my best shot. The bottom line? College is my dream that I hope I will pass through. And it's my ticket to the long ride of achieving my goals in life.…

College success is not as difficult for most young students as learning how to take on adult responsibilities. Letting go of adolescence and becoming an adult is more challenging according to Carl Pickardt, Psychologist and adolescent specialist. If you take responsibility for showing up to class regularly, turning papers and work in on time, and sacrificing some of the time spent with friends in favor of more study time, you have won half the battle for achieving college success. Being responsible for meeting the demands of college (ability to respond and step up to the plate) is one of the keys to college achievement.…

In my mind, I see a long, white corridor, and the length of this corridor is infinite. Hanging from the ceiling is a flashing neon sign, and on that sign is the word "SUCCESS". As I look down the corridor, I can see beautifully carved mahogany doors with shiny brass knobs. Mounted on the front of all the doors are shiny brass plates that are marked "OPPORTUNITY". I walk to the first door, and try to open it, but the door is locked, so I move down the corridor to the next door. I place my hand on the knob, and try turning it only to find that this door is also locked. I go from one door to the next, trying another, and another. Before long, I find myself running frantically down the corridor, jiggling all the door knobs. They are all locked, and no matter how hard I try, none of them can be opened.…

The first, and most obvious area in my life in which I see both forms of motivation occurring is in my drive to graduate from Holmes with an Associate’s degree. Extrinsically, I’m motivated to obtain that official piece of paper because being a college graduate will elevate my earning capacity, both in the job I have now and in future jobs. I work for the school system, so knowing I will be praised and possibly even get a raise by my employer once I graduate is a huge external motivation. Achieving a degree also serves as a tangible building block for my ultimate dream, to become a speech pathologist. I must first have these core classes finished and printed on a transcript before I can begin a focused level of study. Intrinsically, I have been out of high school for nearly a decade, and sometimes it hurts my self-esteem not having achieved a college degree yet. Watching others from my class become nurses, teachers, doctors and lawyers motivates me (perhaps through envy) to achieve a career myself. I feel as though the time I’ve spent working has been invaluable, because I know what I don’t want to do for a living, and it’s given me a chance to mature and truly value my education. All of this life experience, plus my strong desire to help children with autism and/or learning disabilities, motivates me internally to follow the career path I feel God has designed for me.…
