Personal Narrative: My Work Ethic

Good Essays
Growing up I had two loving parents, they always wanted the best possible for me. School was always challenging for me. I never liked it, and I never had a good work ethic. It started when I was young, my parents never made me do chores, and they always rewarded me for minimal efforts of work, and it did not help me in the long run. I had a very easy life growing up, but being spoiled does not help when you become an adult. It’s very hard to just gain a work ethic, it takes a lot of time and effort. One thing that sets me apart from the other candidates applying to the University of California is my hard work. I have always been smaller than other kids my age. At 15 years old I was 4’ 10’’ and looked like I was eleven years old. Although this was an advantage at the airport, when I would begin to take off my shoes and the TSA Officer would look at me and say, “Don’t worry twelve and under can keep their shoes on.” I was often discredited for my size. Especially because I played volleyball, a sport known for its height. I constantly struggled to make a team I deserved to be on because people would see my height and automatically think I was not capable. Although my height often led me to feel discouraged and angry it eventually taught hard work.…

I recently found a list of goals that I had written 20 years ago. Most of the goals were realistic and I was able to achieve them. While I was checking the items off my list that I accomplished, there was one that I have debated about for many years—returning to school to earn a degree. Returning to school has always been achievable; however, as each year of my life sped by and I got older, I always came up with more and more excuses as to why I should not return to school. One day I received a course catalog in the mail showing online classes at the college. I decide that an online class would be the first step to my future. I am so grateful for the first day of that class. All the excuses and delays regarding returning to school were in vain. It is amazing the different prospective I know have about being a child verses an adult in school.…

The values that I hold most deeply are friendships, family, and happiness. Values are things that are important in the way I live and work and I believe all of these things play a major role in my life. Since I was a little kid, my values have changed tremendously. Back then, my values would've been playtime, mac & cheese, and chicken nuggets. I believe values mature as you grow and mine definatly did. For example, when I was younger I remember being friends with everyone, but now I only have a select number of friends. This represents values to me. My values inform my actions by them always being my first thought while making a decision. They always play a role in my…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…

As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

In today’s world, a college education is the cornerstone of life. Obtaining a college degree opens many doors of opportunity. These building blocks of opportunity will help shape who I am as a person. I am building a future, striving for success, and always looking to better myself. Abraham Lincoln once said “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” I have been haunted by similar words, in my own head, for quite some time. I never finished college, yet I love to learn. I have always dreamed of completing college, owning a company, or working in an office. Now, given the opportunity, completing this degree will become my greatest achievement. Until now, I have always felt that I let myself down. I’ve always had the best intentions, but life’s unexpectedness put several roadblocks in the way of me completing a degree. I graduated high school twenty-five years ago. Since then, I have raised a family and have unfulfilling employment. Being able to attend college and complete this degree which I am embarking upon is important to me because I have matured into the person I want to be.…
