1 Know how to recognise signs of abuse
1.1(a) Define the following types of abuse: physical abuse
Physical abuse is the use of physical force that could potentially lead to an injury, physical pain or an impairment.
1.1(b) Define the following types of abuse: sexual abuse
Sexual abuse is any action that pressures or forces someone to do something sexually they don't want to do. This includes any actions that may restrict a persons ability to control the circumstances in which sexual activity occurs, e.g. restricting access to birth control, rape, etc.
1.1(c) Define the following types of abuse: emotional/psychological abuse
Any actions which cause the victim to have a lower sense of self-worth e.g. name calling, being told they’re ugly/useless, having presence ignored.
1.1(d) Define the following types of abuse: financial abuse
Depriving or restricting someone of their financial independence
1.1(e) Define the following types of abuse: institutional abuse
The smooth running of a service is put before the care, needs and wishes of the individual.
1.1(f) Define the following types of abuse: self-neglect
An adult who is able to take care of themselves, but fails - resulting in serious physical, mental or emotional harm.
1.1(g) Define the following types of abuse: neglect by others
Failure to provide adequate care for people who are unable to care for themselves.
1.2 Identify the signs and/or symptoms associated with each type of abuse
There are many tell-tale signs that someone is being abused:
Physical abuse = bruises or finger marks, swollen bruises (welt marks), fractures or twisted fractures, black eyes or bruised ears, scalds or burns, scratches/cuts, a history of unexplained falls/injuries, explanations not matching the injuries, withdrawal/mood changes, reluctant to be alone with someone (abuser), deterioration of health without physical explanation.
