Summary Of The Blood Brain Barrier
The brain has a specialized vasculature that extends from the surface to deep within the brain tissue, reaching all regions in order to meet the brain’s high metabolic demands. Exposures to toxic compounds entering the blood have the potential to access this vasculature leaving the brain susceptible to possible neurotoxicity. Currently, there are over 200 known chemicals that have been correlated with neurotoxicity. A protective mechanism called the blood brain barrier (BBB) was first discovered in 1880 by researcher Paul Elrich, which demonstrated that IV administration of certain dyes stained all organs but spared the brain and spinal cord.

    The nervous system consists of two parts, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) (National Institute of Health [NIH], 2013). Each part plays a role in our bodily functions. The CNS is made up of the brain and the spinal cord, the PNS is made up of the all the branch-like fibers that come off the spinal cord and reach all over the body- arms, legs, face, neck, etc. Without the nervous system there would be no way to get information from the brain to the rest of the body; all the messages that our brain sends out must be sent though the nervous system through neuron communication.     The first one is the central nervous system which includes the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves of these two structures are in control of body movement. The second division includes the rest of the nerves and ganglia that are not included in the central nervous system, which serve as communications relay and it’s known as the peripheral nervous system (Marieb, E.N. & Hoehn, K.). The existence of both divisions is very important because their function is necessary in order to maintain a homeostasis. The peripheral nervous pick up stimuli through receptors from the external environment. Stimuli is then sent to the brain for processing via afferent sensory neurons. Once the brain receives the information and processes it, it send a response via efferent sensory neurons. The response gets to effector muscles which can now react to the situation on the external environment.
