In an effort to obtain a full time position as an RN at OMH, I have constructed an effective resume and cover letter, submitted several online applications to different units, and contacted the Human Resources Director informing her of my applications and OMH scholarship status. I have interviewed with the clinical coordinator and nurse manager on 3rd floor for an RN position. I have also introduced myself to the nurse managers on 2nd and 4th floor and provided them with a hard copy of my resume and cover letter. Strengths and opportunities for this objective are my determination, positive attitude, openness to experience on any unit, and a guaranteed job through my OMH Work Back Scholarship. Possible weaknesses or threats may be other nurses applying for the same positions, inability to successfully pass the ADN program or the NCLEX, or not being persistent enough in my follow-up with the nurse…

Transitioning from nursing school to working in the hospital can be challenging for a new graduate. As a result of the nursing shortage, new graduate nurses are being hired with little to no experience. This can be overwhelming for new nurses, especially when they lack support and proper training from their employers. The amount of stress, pressure and lack of training results to a high turnover rate for new graduate nurses. According to Shellenbarger & Robb, 13% of new RNs change jobs after only one year, further aggravating the nurse vacancy rate and leading to unnecessary hospital expenditure (Shellenbarger & Robb 2016). The question is, why are nurses leaving the profession after completing their education and obtaining a position working in the field? With growing demands of healthcare…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

I like to believe that there are an array of factors and values that I have encompassed throughout my life that have played a role in forming my personal philosophy of nursing. I have always viewed myself as a kind and compassionate individual who enjoys helping others. As I have previously mentioned, my mother has been an oncology nurse for my entire life. I view her as one of, if not the main influential aspects in deciding upon my career. When I was younger I always enjoyed hearing her stories or reading her letters from patients about how helpful and caring she had been. She always came home with a smile on her face and would say that even after the most stressful day, knowing that she was able to make a difference in someone else’s life, is what kept her going. I have used that as a fuel in my own career. I made it one of…
