I am also keen to make a difference to people’s lives, whether caring for children or supporting parents. My interest in and appreciation for this career has been encouraged by family members who work in the NHS, and who have made me aware of its less glamorous side, as well as the positivity of caring for others.…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

My name is Hannah Atakorah. I am a currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Columbus State University. I was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, where there are not many hospitals or nurses to provide the much needed medical care for sick people. Education has always been an essential aspect of my life, but growing up in a single home in Africa did not make it easy. I was exposed to the medical field at an early age because I was fortunate enough to participate in a clinical volunteering program held in the city where I lived in Ghana which gave me a life changing experience. During that period of time, I was able to recognize how nurses are the most important people in the health care field. The sacrifices they make to give an individual top quality care are what make nurses phenomenal people.…

I am looking forward to becoming a full-time student of nursing. By doing this, I will begin to fulfill my obligation to myself, to the medical profession and to society. The School of Professional studies is my first choose in schools when it comes to obtaining my BSN. I love that the classes are online, which is not only convenient but necessary since I work full time as a Registered Nurse and my schedule rotates and there is not much flexibility. Another major factor in choosing a school was my finances. I just started worked as a Registered Nurse in August before that I was a Certified Nurses Assistant and barley was able to pay my bills. When I started looking at schools I realized to no longer wanted to feel like I was digging myself out of debt, I wanted to enroll in a school I would be able to afford.
