Six Dimensions of Health Worksheet

Part 1

For each of the following six dimensions of health, list at least one characteristic, activity, belief, or attitude that reflects that dimension in your life. Provide a brief explanation with each example. Refer to Ch. 1 in the text for explanations of these dimensions.

Physical health: Exercising weekly is an activity that helps to contribute to me having better physical health. I know that I should exercise more but I am taking baby steps.

Social health: Remaining honest and loyal to my friends are some characteristics working towards my social health. It helps me maintain a good relationship with them.

Intellectual health: Driving everyday to and from strengthen my intellectual health. When I drive I have to make many decisions and have to constantly think and remain aware of all that surrounds me.

Environmental health: When I recycle I am making a decision to help the environment. This action helps to improve our environment.

Emotional health: I practice my emotional health regularly at work. There are many times when people say things to me that I disagree with there are often times I want to go off however, I try to deliver my thoughts in an appropriate manner and if I am really angry I keep it within myself.

Spiritual health: Praying regularly is an activity that I do daily as a Christian to strengthen my spiritual health.

Part 2

In approximately 125 to 200 words, describe health and wellness in your own words using the ideas and concepts for each of the six dimensions of health.
Many people view health and wellness as just the physical however after reading this week chapter it allowed us to take a deeper look into the real meaning of health and wellness. To be considered healthy and well in my opinion you have to work on all the dimensions of health physical, social, intellectual, environmental, emotional, and spiritual. Working on all of these dimensions

    Before being able to describe the dimensions of health, it is important to look at the concept of health. Throughout the years, there have been many definitions of health, usually relating to the physical aspects of illness rather than a holistic view. The World Health Organization (WHO) provided a well-known definition in 1946. This states that ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. This definition contributed to the process of thinking about health as a wider concept as it demonstrates that other factors can influence health and wellbeing. The WHO further developed their definition of health in 1984.     Most people will think of physical wellness as how they are feeling, whether they are sick, tired, or injured in some sort of way. According to Harper, he defines physical wellness as the ability to perform daily activities in a safe, capable, and efficient manner, as well as the physical capacity to respond effectively in unusual situations (2008). Harper further mentions that there are five components of physical wellness, such as cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility. If a person does not have physical wellness then they are at an increased risk of a lifestyle disease such as hypokinetic disease, diabetes, and obesity. Qualities of a person that inhibits physical wellness, as discussed by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research are controlling your weight, combating health conditions and diseases, improves your mood, boosts your energy, sleep better, put the spark back into your love life, and physical fitness can be fun (2011). Furthermore the general goal is to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day in order to attain the above qualities (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2011).
