As a carer I would discuss the options and a choice available to the individual to allow them an informed choice regards their care. Some reason to communicate are, to share information, ideas, express feelings, concerns – A child is feeling ill, and tell her practitioner about. To build relationship – Children talk and play with each other to make friends. To ask questions – to gain knowledge, if you don’t know about a subject you are studying at school. To inform – Some accident happened in your setting and you need to inform the parents. Negotiate – If you want to buy in something in a car booth. Obtain information – If you are lost. Effective communication is extremely important in developing positive relationships. If we communicate effectively this will allow children and young people to learn boundaries and expectations. As childcare providers it is important that we model effective communication with other people. For example in a stressful or excitable situation we need to think about our own communication verbally and non-verbally so as to encourage others to do the same. Having effective communication is important when being at your placement and is needed all the time, having good communication isn’t just with the children but the staff you work with and the children’s parents or carers. Having this with the children and parents can bring a relationship to one another, having trust and confiding in you. Effective communication can be in different ways, verbal or non verbal whichever way we communicate it has to be in a professional tone and acted in a sensible manner. There are many ways to have effective communication with children, by being clear with what you would like the child to do, go down to their level as talking to them standing up may cause them to feel fear. From this the child will feel happy around your presence and will be happy and willing to communicate back. Working as part of a team, alongside the staff within my setting, is essential to ensuring the needs of the children are met. I pass on information to my colleagues in order that we can all have a better understanding of a child’s wants and needs. It is important that individual roles and responsibilities are defined and understood in order that as adults we can support each other and parents/ carers are aware of who they should speak to regarding specific concerns.
