Fremont Village
During the summer, and just around when school started, I started to volunteer at a local elderly home called Fremont Village. The home is an apartmentlike complex with large, multipurpose rooms. I volunteered there every Saturday for a few weeks and performed many tasks involving the entertainment of those that lived in the home. Furthermore, I directly assisted the fulltime employees and nurses of Fremont Village. I learned a great deal from my time at
Fremont Village, including the understanding of the idea of Human Dignity, experiencing the
Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and realizing the impacts that this selfless time given to others can do to my life and character.
An impactful part of my experiences at Fremont Village made me understand more about
Human Dignity and the idea that all people should be treated equally since we are all made in
God’s image. To be completely honest, before I volunteered here, I did not understand the needs of those over the age of 80 years; I simply assumed that these elderly people lived at their own homes just like those around the age 60 do until the end of their days. However, I was completely mistaken. I now understand that after the age of 80, the human body starts to deteriorate and many of us humans require special assistance to complete mundane tasks such as walking. After my help at Fremont Village, I realized that if we did not give special treatment to the elderly, we are neglecting their dignity to be treated as equals to everyone else. They require
special help such as pushing their wheelchairs, reminding them to eat or take their medication, and many of them have certain diseases that increase by age such as arthritis. By volunteering here I helped to protect the dignity of the elderly.
I also experienced a few Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit in my hours of volunteering.
