For a company to be successful, it requires team members to be dedicated, self-directed, honest, and accountable. High performance teams are beneficial to the company because they help to improve efficiency in production, service delivery, improve quality, and promote faster decision making in creating innovative solutions to conflicts. However, establishing a self-directed team is not a one-way process that can be implemented overnight. It requires proper planning, preparation, and skills. Major challenges that managers encounter include the ability to establish a strong vision and purpose, managing diversity, and drafting conflict management plan. Some of the most important things that managers should focus on are the negotiation processes which must be headed by a team of professionals. Any conflict arising within the group must be addressed as fast as possible to ensure that it does not affect the overall performance of the organization. Failure to do that, a manager will not achieve a high performing or self-directed team.
The primary role of managers is to coordinate the activities of a team. This begins with proper allocation of duties to each member to ensure there is the equal and fair distribution of responsibilities. Proper coordination helps in minimizing duplication of responsibilities and ensuring that there is accountability within the team. If duties are not randomly shared, conflicts will arise as some members try to raise their issues. Therefore, a manager may never attain a high performing team without coordinating the team members.
