Before answering this question let me start with a statement that significant number of teacher and educators worldwide discriminate (unknowingly) against culturally different students by lacking sensitivity, knowledge and skills. I know it from my own experience of living in very different (culturally) countries like China, Russia, Central Asia and Australia. I approached a social worker who works with a charity organization. The organization helps children from different cultural background who due to poverty they cannot afford basic needs such as place to stay, education and food. The organization comes to their aid by providing the basic necessities to them. The organization tends to deal with children from diverse cultural backgrounds. This is such an important topic and one that can have an extremely positive or negative impact on our professional career. The first step in improving cultural competency is understanding ethnocentrism. Garthwait defines ethnocentrism as believing one’s own cultural is superior to another’s. Having knowledge of ethnocentrism will help me identify when it is happening and take the necessary steps to lessen its affects. Self-examination may not identify my gaps in cultural competency, for this reason I will look to peers, co-works, and supervisors to assist me in areas that need attention. The purpose of this article study is to examine in what way multicultural competencies are displayed in supervision using the Ancis and Ladany framework. Additionally, this study considered supervisees’ perceived experiences of supervisor multicultural competence in supervision and its impact on the supervisees.
