Field Note: Humans are geographers by nature. They can think territorially or spatially and have an awareness of, and curiosity about the distinctive nature of places. Even children possess qualities of geographers, creating carefully mapped realms in tiny places. Places possess an emotional quality, and we all must belong somewhere. Humans' insatiable curiosity and the place-centered element within us gave birth to geography as an academic discipline. Conquest and commerce generated a need to know about the world and pragmatism was added long ago by traders and explorers. Geography literally means "to describe the Earth," and the practical aspects of geography first arose among the Greeks, Romans, Mesopotamians, and Phoenicians.…

Following the explanation, the authors examine geography and its definition. Geography is concerned not only with physical locations, but also with people and cultures (Getis et al., 2014). The discipline does not simply study points on a map of the distance between two cities; it seeks to uncover the science behind the natural and human realms and describe it a set of relationships and sequences (Getis et al.). Consider a statement the authors make on the dual nature of geography “the content of an area has both physical and cultural aspects, and geography is always concerned with understanding both” (Getis et al., 2014, p. 3). In much the same way that simple anatomy prepares a surgeon for surgery, place locations prepare students for the understanding of geography’s more sophisticated concepts (Getis et…

Geography, simply put, can be summed up in two words: “where and why” (Rubenstein). However, it is difficult to sum geography up simply because, in fact, there is nothing simple about it. Geography can explain everything about “the earth, its peoples, and why [the] two interact as they do” (Sherer). Geography is studied by the geographers of the world who use “[maps] and mapping… [To] analyze and portray the world” (Knox) because “people everywhere struggle to understand [it]” (Knox). Geography, being “both a physical and a social science” (Rubenstein), can explain how the distribution of people, disease, language, climate, food, etc. has affected the world as a whole. Overall, geography explains the physical aspects of the world, while also provoking our thoughts and questions about it. Finally, “geography stimulates our imaginations and satisfies our curiosity about the many exciting people and places in the world” (Corbin).…
