“Microcomputer” is a term used to refer to computers that contain a microprocessor. This type of computer is known by its familiar name- the PC. This is the type of computer that someone is mostly to use. As the name suggest, a microprocessor is a very small processor. This is in the form of a silicon chip like a Pentium Processor.
Since they use smaller processors, microprocessors are smaller than the other form of computers, yet they are the most important of all. They are also far less expensive than the other categories. Microprocessors come in different types and sizes: ➢ The desktop, which id the most popular type, is usually supplied with separate units like the tower, a monitor, keyboard, mouse and external computers. ➢ The laptops or notebooks are small portable computers. These machines come with the monitor, speakers, CPU, and keyboard as a single unit. ➢ The palmtop is the size of calculators.
Desktop (personal computer)
A laptop computer, usually called a notebook computer by manufacturers, is a battery- or AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conveniently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. A laptop typically weighs less than 5 pounds and is 3 inches or less in thickness. Among the best-known makers of laptop computers are IBM, Apple, Compaq, Dell, and Toshiba. Laptop computers generally cost more than desktop computers with the same capabilities because they are more difficult to design and manufacture. [pic]
A minicomputer is a multiprocessing computer that is much smaller and slower than a mainframe. The term “mini” is a bit misleading, though, because minicomputers are still a lot larger that PC’s people have in their homes. Minicomputers support fewer users than mainframes. These are mostly used for specialized tasks such as scientific and engineering research and Computer Aided Design (CAD). Mini computers like the mainframe computers are used by business organization.
In the early days of computing, mainframes were huge computers that could fill an entire room or even a whole floor! As the size of computers has diminished while the power has increased, the term mainframe has fallen out of use in favor of enterprise server. You'll still hear the term used, particularly in large companies to describe the huge machines processing millions of transactions every day. These machines can function in simple operating environments. They do not need air conditioning. They do not more processing power, speed and cost more than the microcomputer. The physical size of the mainframe units spread over thousands of square feet. They have massive memories and can handle information processing needs of many customers- they are often used in government establishments. They are also used by banks for processing customer accounts, utilities companies for processing telephone, water, and electric bills, and by airlines for making flight arrangement. These systems can support 100-500 users simultaneously, working at their own terminals. They are next in rank to supercomputers.
Supercomputer is the general term given to the fastest computers in the world. These machines are extremely powerful and are especially designed for high- speed numeric computations. Supercomputers are used for complex applications such as weather forecasting, genetic decoding, military defense system and processing of geological data. Supercomputers can support aver 500 users at the same time. The networking of PC in some organizations has substituted for this expensive super computer.
