Challenges in Group Discussion
If you are the leader of a group discussion, there are a number of challenges you will have to face. Being able to successfully overcome these challenges will mean the difference between the success and failure of your group.

The biggest challenges that you will face in group discussions are avoiding put-downs, connecting solutions, listening for data, and summarizing ideas. Being able to overcome these challenges will bring about successful group discussions.

Challenge 1: Avoiding put-downs are extremely important. Put-downs occur when members of the group ridicule the ideas that are presented by other members. When this happens, it can slow down the productivity of the group, and can stop other members for voicing their own ideas or solutions. One way to solve this problem is to make it clear at the beginning of the discussion that no put-downs are allowed. Let the members know that if they do not agree with an idea that has been presented, come up with a better idea and present it in a way that does not humiliate the person that they are in disagreement with.

Another way to avoid put-downs is to let members know that you appreciate their hard work. This will make the confident, and will encourage them to work harder.

Challenge 2: The next challenge that you will want to overcome is the connecting solutions or ideas. The goal of most group discussion is to solve a problem. This is especially true for companies that are trying to develop marketing strategies. In order for them to succeed, it is important for members to make connections regarding the information that is discussed. One common problem that is seen in group discussion is members who create new ideas instead of adding to an idea that has been presented by another member.

Often, these ideas will not be related to the other ideas that were raised. This is problematic, because a group will not be able to come up with a relevant solution to a problem if the members keep generating new ideas

Through this group assignment, I really learned much. First, I realize that I should learn more about finance and accounting .when talking about the last part in presentation during discussion, I cannot participate in the debate, and even do not know what they said when comes some proper nouns. Although my major is logistics, it is good for me to learn more about other subject knowledge such as finance and management. Second is although we had discussion many times, we were inefficient and wasted much time. We supposed to have a target or task for each discussion, and leader need to coordinate the meeting. In addition, democracy does not work every time in small group, everyone has a different idea and wants to persuade others, which is the reason that a good leader is very important for a team, so that I should start to train leadership skills. Third is that unity and cooperation are essential to a good team. Team members need to work for…

When you are working with other professionals, you must be able to communicate effectively. This is important because you will need to share ideas, feelings, any information you find that you need to tell someone else. Group communication is a great way to communicate with other professionals, as each person has an opportunity to get their point across and have their own opinion on things. For example, Btec states “Groups work best if there is a team leader who encourages everyone to have a say in turn, rather than everyone trying to speak at once.” Btec (2010, P5)…

When communicating in a group there are certain rules to be followed, for example; is there a leader of the group? Is everyone getting involved? Can everyone hear and understand each other clearly? An example of group communication in a health and social environment could be a counselling group in a rehab centre. There may be friction between some of the patients. Some patients may not be able to cope and some may not know what to say. In a case like this there would be a member of staff leading the group discussion that hopefully would help to relax the service users and help them to have confidence in their surroundings.…

Group communication relies on prior understanding of the group objectives and the group's culture. Unlike individual communication, individuals in a group do not provide feedback directly to one another. Rather, they provide feedback to be addressed by the entire group. With group communication, every participant’s input is necessary to help the group comprehend the objectives so that the whole group can benefit and arrive at mutual understanding. Therefore, in individual communication, the exchange of ideas and opinion is specific to the two individuals involved. Whereas, group communication involves many people and the communication is not specific to just one person. Group communication includes the input of many people which makes the process more difficult. Everyone in the group contributes ideas that need consideration. Members of a group want to feel that their input is having impact on the group dynamics.…

When debating on a topic or pacific subject I prefer to debate one on one, but that is not the only way debating is done it is also done in groups and this can be a benefit in some situations and can also be a problem in some cases. When having a group debate it gives you a broad approach with having more than two people opinion, it’s going to be a harder fight, but you will get more than one standpoint on the argument. A group debate also provides diversity amongst the topic, the argument should still be based on facts and proven research but will also be debated different due to different peoples approach. Another benefit that I can see with a group debate may be strength in numbers if the group is one sided on the debate they can outnumber the opponent and win the argument they can also help brain storm and recognize different weaknesses in the opposing argument. This strength in numbers can be both a benefit and a drawback it just depends on what side of the argument you are on. I have never been in a group debate but I have seen a few on T.V. and from what I have seen it is hard to get your thoughts completed before someone is trying to respond to what you just said and when trying to wait for someone to finish their thought you may forget what you wanted to rebuttal or someone else may jump in front of you and now you have more than one comment that you want to respond to. When dealing with groups it’s a lot to process at one time and you have to be on your toes because you have more than one opponent coming at you. There seem to be an equal number of benefits as drawbacks in group debates I also think that the topic is a factor if it is a broad topic then it should be for a group debate and if it is for a narrow topic then it should be one on one.…

    Group Facilitation

There are 5 main techniques of a group facilitation. These techniques are Naming, Silence, Guiding Inclusive Mapping the Conversation and Triangulation. Theses 5 techniques help a group Facilitator guide the group in a successful way to get everyone in the group comfortable participating. The first technique is naming. Naming is a way to recognize dynamic within the group that maybe neutral, positive and negative. When using the naming technique you want to interrupt the moment that is happening and engage the rest of the group. The purpose of the naming technique is to give the whole group a chance to evaluate the interactions and communicate more effectively. Another Technique used for group facilitation is silence. Silence is really important for facilitators and group participants because it allows for reflection on the topic that is being discussed. Silence allows for thoughts to be gathered and gives new people a chance to speak up or for new ideas to be formed. Guiding Inclusive Participation gives everyone a chance to speak. When guiding participation you may ask a certain member that may not participate as often as others their thoughts and feelings about a certain experience. Mapping the conversation allows the facilitators to analyze the patterns of communication by identifying how often a single person speaks as well as how many questions are directed toward a single group member as opposed to the group as a whole. Analyzing the conversation can help a Facilitator redirect the flow of future discussions and can show a Facilitator when guiding inclusive participation may be necessary. The last technique is triangulation prevents group interaction from being dominated by prolonged conversation between one group member and the Facilitator. As a group leader the main goal would be to get all members to participate with the conversation. You would want…
