A Case Study Analysis on the Use of Drama for Development submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in Radio Drama and Documentary under Ma’am Ma. Teresita B. Osalla, 2nd Semester AY 2013-2014.
A. Title of the Communication Project/ or the Drama Program
The project, Bravos do Zambeze (Zambezi Braves), consisted of a 26-episode radio drama. It was produced in two (2) local languages, Portugese and Sena, which were most commonly used in the coverage area.
It was initiated and funded by the International Organization for Migration as part of the United Nations Delivering as One Joint Programme on Disaster Risk Reduction. It was implemented and produced by the Community Media for Development (CMFD) Productions.
B. Locale/Community Where the Communication Project was Implemented
The project was implemented at the community villages within the Zambezi River floodplain, specifically in the provinces of Tete, Zambezia, and Sofala in Mozambique. Those places were prone to natural disasters.
C. Problem in the Community Addressed by the Drama Program
The problems faced by the Community within Zambezi River floodplain are the natural disasters that happened since 2000. The people in the villages experienced three severe floods which damaged many lives. The infrastructure is poor and several communities were isolated. The community found the situation more difficult to solve by some issues such as climate change, cultural perceptions, lack of education, and gender inequalities. This has been a difficult challenge for the organizations, agencies and government to cater the needs of these affected people as well as help them solve these problems.
