Becoming a Firefighter As a little girl, I have always wanted to walk in my father’s footsteps. He is a volunteer firefighter. I knew one day I would get the chance to be just like him. I am now a volunteer firefighter, and have been for about 2 years now. I knew I wanted to help people in ways that others couldn’t. Becoming a firefighter was a wise life changing choice I made in my life. I got in on a little later than I would have liked do the birth of my first child. One day our local fire department got called to a grass fire. It was a pretty good size fire too. My mother and I had to take a cooler of ice cold water out to all the guys. At that point I knew I wanted to get in on the action. I recall telling my mother that I wanted to be out there putting the fire out and saving some of the owners’ property, rather than being on the side of the road handing out water. I wanted to be one of the ones that saved some land. The following week I had put my application in to join the fire department. The next month I got accepted to join. That was one of the happiest days of my life. I knew on that day, I was going to be the one to be out fighting fire and saving lives. My first run was not one of my happiest. It was wreck and the patient was injured pretty badly and he ended not making it. I never thought I would feel the way I felt when the paramedics called his time of death. It was like a feeling of failure had just rushed over me. It was a very sad time for. Just joining the fire department and having the patient on my very first run had not made it. A couple runs after that had not been very good either. It was like I was on a streak of making runs where the patients don’t make it. I had quit making runs for a while after the first 4 went the way they did. I just felt like a total failure. My father had talked me back into start making the runs

This world is a curse because they don’t value life at all. To them, if someone dies it’s not a big deal. An example of this is one page 29 and it says, “Fireman in Seattle, purposely set Mechanical Hounds to his own chemical complex and let it loose.” This is wrong in many ways. To start off, the fireman has their own personal killing machine that they can use for their own use. The fireman might even have a game with these vicious killing machines for entertainment. The fireman doesn't even care if a bunch of people die so that they could gain entertainment. On page 32 they have these 5 steps that they have to follow. As I ran that hill I began to cry because of the pain. I thought my legs were going to give out from underneath me. The pain I was feeling helped me take a few strides that caused me to stumble a little, but soon regained my composure. I was at the top. All that was left was one last final turn, and then the downhill. I could see the finish line in the distance and then started sprinting. Coach Rojas was screaming at me to keep going and not to stop. At this point, my heart was pounding rapidly. My body was worn down, hot and exhausted. Crossing the finish line was the only thing on my mind. For a moment, I blocked off from the race and thought about all the hard work that went into the season. I crossed the finish line and at that moment I knew that I had put my sweat and tears into this race. I couldn’t feel my legs, all I wanted was water. Soon after I heard that we won Second place in the district which was the best the team has won. I felt no pain at this point since I was part of a group of people who loved this sport and put effort into it. It gave me happiness to be part of a team that now was like my…

Captain James Kelley and Sgt. Virgil Bloom, two volunteer firefighters from the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department in Fredericksburg, Virginia, were suspended last Saturday after they attempted to save an 18-month-old girl. The girl was having a seizure, and the two men used their fire engine to take her to the hospital. Kelly told reporters that he and his partner were the first responders on the scene after they received a call from the girl's father at McDonald's. He said that, if they had waited for medics to arrive, it would have taken an extra 10 or 15 minutes had they not chosen to take the girl to the hospital right then.…

Within a few minutes, the sound of sirens rushes across the school parking lot. The heat from the pavement causes the emergency vehicles to waver surreally, as if they're an illusion speeding toward me. The kid who rolled off the side of the bleachers screams as the paramedics lift him onto a stretcher. His leg is twisted at an odd angle. It's definitely broken.…

Later that night, Kaden went into the living room to ask my dad a question, he looked out out the window and screamed at the top of his lungs, "THE SHOP IS ON FIRE, CALL 911!!!"…

So I can honestly say ever since I was a child I have dreamed of being a firefighter. The biggest step I have taken in my adolescence day to being a firefighter is constantly talking about it, drooling over the fire trucks when my grandfather or uncle took me to the fire station, or practicing putting out fires that I started out in the back yard with my dad’s garden hose.…
