The storyline of the Hunger Games is so powerful and compelling that it is not known for a single remarkable line or saying. However, there are a number of quotations in the book that are significant and reveal details about the characters or about life in Panem.

Quotation One: Kind people have a way of working their way inside me and rooting there.

This reflects Katniss’s thoughts while on the train to the Capitol. Haymitch has thrown up on himself, and Peeta has offered to clean him up, sending Katniss away. Katniss wonders why he is doing so when there are people from the Capitol who can clean Haymitch. It is then that she realizes that Peeta is doing so because he is kind, and she reflects upon what the kindness might mean for her.

Quotation Two: Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.

Effie Trinket concludes her opening to the reaping with this statement, and the idea of the odds being for or against someone recurs throughout the novel. Earlier, Gale and Katniss joke with each other about this statement, using levity to help reduce their tension.

Quotation Three: Remember, we’re madly in love, so it’s all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it.

Peeta tells Katniss this after they are reunited and are sitting in the cave. He knows that she is pretending that they are in love, so he teases her, hoping to get more kisses out of her. The flirtatious nature of the interaction does nothing to help Katniss understand whether or not his feelings are genuine.

Quotation Four: You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.

Katniss is thinking about the red-haired Avox girl who has been serving her since she came to the Capitol. She is horrified that she did nothing to save the girl, but watched them kill the boy and take the girl away to mutilate her. Rationally, Katniss might understand that there was...
