Katniss Everdeen – Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist of The Hunger Games. A 16-year-old girl from the Seam, an exceptionally impoverished section of the already poverty-stricken District 12, Katniss has been responsible for the care of her family since her father’s death five years prior to the beginning of the novel. When her younger sister, Primrose, is selected as the female tribute from District 12, Katniss volunteers to take her place at the Games. At the Hunger Games, Katniss is determined to make it home alive because she promised Rue that she would, but she does not relish the idea of hurting the other tributes. However, Katniss is unsure about her true feelings for Peeta. Moreover, by defying the Gamemakers with a threat to commit a double suicide rather than kill Peeta, Katniss has angered the Capitol.

Despite the low odds, Prim is selected as District 12’s girl tribute. Katniss volunteers in her place and promises to return to Prim. Though Prim plays a relatively limited role in the novel, she serves as Katniss’s inspiration during her time in the arena.

Gale Hawthorne – Gale Hawthorne is an 18-year-old boy from the Seam in District 12. He and Katniss are best friends. They hunt together, both supporting their families through their illegal hunting activities. He and Katniss might also have romantic feelings for one another, though those feelings remain largely unexplored during the first part of the novel.

Peeta Mellark – Peeta Mellark is the male tribute from District 12. When he is...
