Topic : The use of technology in the knowledge age has had its complications. Identify challenges facing institutions in maintaining high academic standards and propose possible solutions.
It is easy to ascertain that humans today, live in a modern society as the increasing improvements, innovation and demand for technological devices are rapidly increasing. This further fosters the development of the era of information as more information can be obtained quickly and efficiently. This increases the knowledge level of society which cultivates the development of that particular society. Technology shapes our society as it is used for entertainment, business, research and the media. Technology has become available to the majority of the world’s population which enhances knowledge and information being spread. Technology is predominantly used in the present to bring awareness to social issues that affects society. A notorious example of this statement is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This challenge was spread across the medium of social networking sites to raise funds and awareness of this disease. This is one example of the advantages of technology use today, as well as assisted technology learning for disabled students.
However, there are many drawbacks to the increasing use of technology such as deteriorating health, lack of communication skills and poor time management. It has been quoted that ‘we live in an era of smart phones and dumb people.’ This statement espouses that as we are co-dependent on technology to do the heavy work for us so we become complacent and this hinders creativity, critical thinking and the use of logistics. In today’s schools, students are encouraged to use technology for research purposes. However, students use the ‘copy’ and ‘paste’ options to do their work for them which inhibit the learning process thus strengthening their dependency on technology to do the thinking for them.

Mark Bauerlein notices “intellectual habits … slipping … each year” due to technological distractions (Source A). But thanks to the digital revolution, it’s now easier than ever to gather information, which has caused a lack of enthusiasm for intense research on a topic and gathering more information. Although this may be true in most cases, one can easily pursue a subject- it’s just a matter of desire. Sharon Begley states an issue on what’s meant by the “dumbest” and how there is no “empirical evidence” that technology impairs one’s thinking ability (Source B). There is nothing that identifies what “dumb” specifies, nor is there anything that undoubtedly confirms technology as a hindrance to one’s mental development. It’s only by one’s own will to venture out for knowledge and whether it’s used in an effective way.…

After reading those articles, through my experiences in college, I was able to vividly retrospect my behaviors and results from using or not using technology. When I first joined college, my friends and I had new laptops carrying around to school taking note with them. Due to ban laptop policy in high school, I was so pleased that I got to look at my computer screen and write down what professor said. Sometimes, I stray out from the lecture and spent time doing other unnecessary activity, but I did not think that it was because of my laptop. Even if I don’t have my laptop around me, sometimes I zone out thinking about something else. I believe that regardless of using technology devices, it is my own or students’ responsibility to manage and pay attention in any…

But, without a proper base for students to build upon, the technology is useless. The internet is a great and expansive place, and that is why sometimes students rather explore it then listen to their teachers. All these sites and apps are taking up the attention of students throughout the world. This is shown in a Canadian study which proves that computers are helping lower the users grade and his or hers classmates as well. The experiment showed that students who were using computers during the lecture had lower grades than those who were using pen and paper. The worst part is that students around the computer user were also affected and they too had lower grades. A professor at NYU said that “screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke.” He teaches Media Studies and was an advocate for the use of technology during class. The tipping point for him was when he realized that the distractions spread. He no longer allows the use of technological devices unless the assignment requires it.
