Smoking Cigarettes: Bad for One’s Health Smoking cigarettes is very bad for one’s health. Yet people all over the world do it every day. No matter how many warnings that the Surgeon General puts on cigarette packs people still smoke. . I feel that as years go by people are understanding the risks that go along with smoking cigarettes more and more. Hopefully in the future everyone will understand the risks and cigarettes will be banned. Smoking cigarettes can cause many different types of diseases and illnesses, such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and coronary artery disease, throughout the human body.
First of all, cigarette smoking can cause a person to have cancer. It doesn’t have a specific place in the body that it picks to place the cancer. Cancer can be in the mouth, the throat, the lungs, and many other places throughout the body. Lung cancer can be fatal. The more a person sucks in the smoke the more the cancer spreads. It also depends on the individual’s length of smoking habit. A treatment for cancer can be radiation treatments. A person can die if cancer is not treated. Cancer is only one type of disease that cigarette smoking can cause.
Second of all, cigarettes can cause a person to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has a pair of health problems known as bronchitis and emphysema. They are caused by the closing of bronchi, or airways, and tissue over time. They are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, as per the American Lung Association (Writer). Bronchitis can cause a person to wheeze, cough, and to have shortness of breath. The coughing is an attempt to rid the body of the secretions that clog the bronchial tubes. With emphysema a person can have shortness of breath due to the destruction of the alveoli of the lungs and the capillary blood vessels inside. The treatment for these types of diseases is to stop smoking; one can then be prescribed
