A Survivors Mental and Physical Battles (Comparative of Life of Pi and Cast Away
No one can be more appreciative of our daily necessities handed to us

other than a survivor. A survivor endured the greatest hardships just to remain

alive two great survivors which had to fight for their lives are Pi Patel a young

indian boy and Chuck Noland a middle aged Fed Ex intern. Their entire life

flashed in front of their very own eyes as they had to fight the environment, the

giant deathly ocean, and their very own fears.

Pi as a young boy was always interested in Religion and loving God. Even

with his father telling him animals are not his friends his religious side always

overpowered making him believe that every animal has a soul. When his father

scars him by showing Richard Parker devour an innocent goat Pi begins to re-

think his opinion on animals. However once deserted in the middle of the Pacific

with the tiger he then recognizes in order to be safe Richard Parker must feel

safe as well. Pi earns Richard Parkers trust by feeding him and helping him survive

upon the boat making the tiger react positive towards Pi. (even sharing the boat

with him) Pi was always taken care of by his mother and Father. His mother took

care of him and fed him and his father supported the family and taught Pi many

life lessons as well as shared his Zoology background. When Pi is on the boat he

recognizes he is responsible for himself and no one is there to help him stay alive.

As necessities are not easily available he recognizes his values are challenged in

order to stay alive. The main value Pi struggled with is vegetarianism. There is no

supply of vegetarian food available for Pi to eat from the ocean, recognizing

that he can only catch fish to survive he battles his upbringing morals and eats

the fish choosing survival over religious beliefs. As Pi puts it ‘ I was alone and

orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific, hanging on to an oar, an adult tiger in

front

I thought that this best fit into the plot of the story because imagine what it would’ve been like to be Pi, to manage surviving out of a sinking ship and knowing that all your family members have died in the ship as it sunk deep into the ocean and being stuck in a lifeboat with wild animals not knowing if or when they’re going to eat you. It must have been a…

Darwin's theory—the survival of the fittest, emphasizes the fierce and somewhat ruthless struggle of survival among the species and the individuals. It is indeed true in most cases. But in Life of Pi, it describes a picture of human and animal's co-existence in a more harmonious way and proves that their struggle and contradiction are not so irreconcilable. In this movie, Pi was taught at his childhood by his father, that the animals, esp, the tiger, etc are not his friends. So at the first of the drift, Pi didn't intend to co-exist with the tiger. He had had the chance to kill it. But his virtuous nature didn't allow himself to do so. So he made the final decision to co-exist with this ferocious animal. He supplied the tiger with food and fresh water to survive so that he himself would not become the dinner of it. The threat to each other and the certain kind of peaceful co-existence helped them persevere to be saved at last. Even Pi himself admitted that "the fear of Richard Parker kept me alert. I wouldn't survive without Richard…

Throughout this scene, there is a common thread of this idea. It first becomes apparent as Pi’s eyesight diminishes and he is blinded. He completely gives up, forfeiting his life and his will to live. As he often does throughout the story, Pi turns to his faith when he is in this time of need. He decides to “leave matters in the hands of God” (242). He does not allow himself to be driven mad because his faith is able to ground him. On the other hand, he gives up his life. He desperately wants his suffering to end so he becomes willing to pay the ultimate price. Driven by the pain of not having the necessary rations of food and water to live, Pi feels as though he should give up. His religion has taught Pi how sacred life is so for Pi this is the most extreme form of desperation.…

In this quote, Pi is explaining how he made it through his journey on the lifeboat. It wasn’t his human nature that saved him, but his animal Richard Parker. The conflict Man v. Self appears in this passage. He has two sides, the innocent boy that he was before the ship sank, and his dark, animalistic side that will do anything to stay alive. Another theme going on in this passage is Man v. Nature. Pi has an animalistic side, Richard Parker, that comes out when only when he does something that is necessary for a means of survival. This passage also shows how there are two sides to Pi. One side was the innocent vegetarian one and the other side was the vicious, animalistic side he had. which came out when Pi was hungry. Richard Parker symbolizes…

The reason why I am explaining this story is because the speech felt as if it was directed toward me and my mindset. I’m not going to explain the entire speech because that would be a little off topic. However, in the beginning of the speech, Wallace says, “There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says ‘Morning, boys. How's the water?’ And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes ‘What the hell is water?’” The meaning I got from this is: Fish are living in water and yet they have no idea what water is. I made a connection because everyday I live in the work of God, yet, never feel his presence. Reading this, I realized the simple things are the hardest to explain. I now have a new mindset and finally realized I need to stop waiting to feel the presence of God. I do not need proof God is there, I just have to…

Most members of a society experience a tragic event; for example, the loss of a friend, loved one, etc. Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi tells the story of Piscine (Pi) Patel, an Indian boy named after a pool in France, who sets sail with his family towards Canada, with their father's collection of zoo animals. As soon their boat reached the open Pacific, it sank. Pi managed to get aboard a lifeboat where he was stranded for 227 days, with a wounded zebra, and orangutan, a hyena, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. But the question is, did Pi Patel imagine the whole ordeal? Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (or PTSD) can cause people to have a loss of time, place, or person orientation, or even an increased or decreased awareness of surroundings1. Did he imagine…

Once Pi is on the lifeboat, his main focus is food and water, as he needs both of these to survive. He is in the physiological stage. He has to ignore his morals because according to the hierarchy, a person cannot focus on a higher level before the one before it is achieved, and at this point, Pi will die if he does not eat and drink. He is forced to go against his religious belief and eat meat in order to survive. His belief becomes secondary at this point because he has to satisfy his physiological needs first.…

In the novel, Life of pi, the author Yann Martel shows that the tiger, Richard Parker, influences pi’s survival greatly. All of pi’s morals and beliefs get tested as he gets thrown into a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean with a tiger. He begins to learn that to survive himself he must learn to survive with this tiger. Richard parker keeps Pi alive and influences his survival by acting as a defense mechanism and keeping him mentally and physically stable. Throughout Pi’s survival Richard parker was looked at as a defense mechanism towards the previous events because he gives pi hope that they will soon be saved. Pi believes that if a tiger can survive, then he could as well. “It was not a question of him or me, but him and me.” (206). Pi begins to realize that they need to survive together and that that will be the only way either one of them will survive. Richard parker kept pi on his toes, always wondering how to survive each day without a tiger eating him, Richard Parker keeps him thinking and alert of what is going on all the time. He was always writing notes and lists on daily activities or what happened that day. “Plan number one: push him off the life boat” (204). One of Pi’s survival plans was to kill Richard parker. He made plan after plan until he realized that the only way to survive is with him. To keep Richard parker alive he needs food and water, much like Pi. When Pi sees that Richard parker was hungry or thirsty, it reminded him to take care of himself as well. “After all, it was for Richard parker and he would have dispatched it with expert ease” (233). Pi starts killing fish not only for him to eat but for parker as well. He begins to make sure both of them are fed and that they will both survive. Richard Parker helped Pi cope with the journey at hand and survive mentally and physically. Therefore, Richard parker is Pi’s survival.…

In Life of Pi, Pi Patel starts off by talking about his belief in being a committed vegetarian. He is vegetarian as he strongly believes all animals deserve the right to live because their lives are sacred. When Pi is stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, he is left to decide between his sixteen-year long commitment to vegetarianism or to give up his life. Pi decides to accommodate meat into his diet in order to continue living at sea. His first experience killing an animal (a fish) was very difficult for him because it was against his morals. “Tears flowing down my cheeks, I egged myself to go on until I heard a cracking sound and no longer felt any life fighting in my hands” (pg. 231). Pi’s tears display the level of mental distress he is going though during this task, yet Pi “egged” himself to go on. He proceeded with the action of killing the fish because he realizes that his regular dietary needs are not going to be met at sea; nowhere is he going to find some daal and chutney. When Pi’s environment changes from the comfort of India to the sea, he gives up his commitment to vegetarianism.…

His father owns a zoo in Pondicherry, providing Pi with a relatively affluent lifestyle and some understanding of animal psychology.[8]…
