What is a printer?
A printer is an is an output device that can make texts and graphics on paper with the help of ink. Furthermore a printer is an external device connected to another digital device, to print out anything shown on the screen of the digital device, which it must have been instructed to print out. Printers transfer images from the system to a surface using little pixels. The most popularly used printers are inkjet and laser printers and they are normally connected to a personal computer. Few printers print out only black and white graphics and texts while most of the produce coloured images. Uses of a printer

Printers have various important uses both in the home and in offices. Some common uses of printers are; 1. Some printers, print out images on ordinary or glossy paper, like coloured pictures from computers, digital cameras, phones 2. Multi functional printers act as fax machines, scanner, telephone and normal printer. Types of printers

In order to choose the perfect printer for the organization we have to know the various types of printers, their functions and their advantages and disadvantages. There are many types of printers but they are divided into two major parts; impact and non-impact printers. Impact printers

Impact printer are printers that produce text or graphics on paper by impacting on paper, that is it forms characters by tiny pins striking against the ink ribbon. This is more of a mechanical process just like a type writer. Impact printers are noisy by nature because of the continuous striking of the printer head on paper. Advantages of Impact printers

1. Impact printers are usually cheaper than other types of printers. 2. Some impact printers are fast.
3. Impact printers can print plenty copies at a time on a multipart paper.

Disadvantages of Impact printers
1. Impact printers are generally noisy.
2. Some types of impact printers have low quality print.
3. Impact printers also produce low quality or no graphics at all. There are different types of impact printers some of them are:

Types of Impact printers
1. Dot matrix printers: dot matrix printers are printers make use of a group of closely spaced pins and a ribbon to produce characters. It does this by the impacting of the pins on the ribbon. The speed of a dot matrix printer depends on the number of pins it has. The pin number varies from 18, 19 or 24.dot matrix printers are also called pin printers and the more the number of pins a dot matrix printer has the smooth its printing job will look. Dot matrix printers were common in the 1970’s and 1980’s but now they are being gradually replaced by new and better models of printers like the inkjet printers. Dot matrix printers are still used where some operations are needed to be carried out like in printing multipart forms such as invoices, shipping forms, purchase orders, labels, and other multipart forms. Characteristics of Dot matrix printers

1. It is bi-directional that is it prints from left to right and then from right to left. 2. They use sprockets to pull feed paper continuously.
3. They make use of pressure when pulling single sheets.

Advantages of Dot matrix printers
1. It is not expensive.
2. It can print multi-copy forms.
3. It prints faster as the number of pins it has increases.

Disadvantages of Dot matrix printer
1. It is noisy.
2. It can be slow compared to other new models of printers. 3. It produces graphics that are of poor quality or sometimes it doesn’t even produce graphics at all.

Line printer
A line printer is a type of impact printer that prints a whole line of a text at a time. Line printers are of three major modifications; chain printers, drum printers and comb printers. Chain printers consist of a chain moving horizontally across the paper to be printer on. This chain contains character sets which are timed to impact the paper with the...
