According to the table it shows us the different preferences between KPLI and PPISMP TESL students in IPGK Raja Melewar. There are basically seven different types that based on the types of books as shown in the following table. The seven types of books are the thriller, science fiction, romance, horror, mystery, historical, and fantasy. This research have been took by the PPISMP Mathematics group students. The books that have been read equally or almost equally by both KPLI and PPISMP TESL students are thriller books and also fantasy books. This both books have been read equally by this two group of students. In my opinion, I think these two types of books can be read by any group of students. Besides that, from the research we can clearly see that the books that become favourite books for KPLI is science fiction which was very greater than the PPISMP TESL students. The percentage of science fiction book for the KPLI students is 70% which have a steady increase than the percentage of PPISMP TESL students is only 30% which means only a few students like to read science fiction books. However, the percentage who likes to read science fiction is greater than PPISMP TESL students but when come to historical KPLI students only 37% and the PPISMP TESL students are 63%.There are 23% difference between this students. The reason why there are so many differences between these two types of books is maybe the KPLI students think that historical are boring to read and maybe the PPISMP TESL students not interested in studying science fiction books. As a conclusion, there are so many types of books that KPLI and PPISMP TESL students like to read. So we must read books until our last

Francine Prose, the author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read”, develops her stance that present day literature is stunting student’s abilities when it comes to reading. Prose develops credibility on the subject as she is a mother of two sons in school and an active reader. Research has been done to support her claims as she supplies irrefutable evidence as tp why reading in school has declined. Overall, I agree with Prose’s point of view that literary standards are falling due to the fact that certain books appeal to the lazy teachers, and that present day literature does not develop enthusiastic readers. First off, teachers nowadays choose to teach their students about values through the reading rather than focusing on literary merit.…

As per VARK scores , my preferred learning style is Read /write. According to this twofold process, reading and writing down the summary of the reading are the characteristic of these learners. Read/write learner likes to use handouts, textbooks and makes list to simplify and categorize the materials. These learners learned by reading and writing and university style courses ,which requires lots of reading, is better for them. the use of course books in the ESL classroom is very common because the course books have the advantages of being visually appealing, easy for the teacher to prepare, and the activities fits well into the timetable. However, from the researcher’s own teaching experience, there are several problems and issues with the course books such as uninteresting topics, repetitive activities, and not enough language exposure. This in terms may affect the student’s learning attitude and motivation. Overall, using course books has its share of benefits and advantages such as having a well organized content with a consistency in the topics and genres for the four skill area (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Teachers who adopt a course book may also find it easier to teach since most of the preparation, including the types of activities, audios and in some cases, achievement tests, are already done by the publisher. This would be a great help to those inexperienced teachers who are just getting started into teaching. However, nothing in the world is perfect and teachers need to somehow solve the issues and problems that may come with ESL course books. These issues and problems may include finding ways to motivate students and teaching students academic skills not found in the course books. In this sense, the teacher’s job is not as easy as it seems. Many hours of planning and developing other activities are still required, but these planning and development will benefit both the student and the teacher by making the classroom activities more fun, more interesting, and result in more…

The five authors of this article came up with a good question that many educators have wondered; does the interest of reading have anything to do with reading ability? We often wonder that because we figure if we allow students the chance to read what they like then they will become better readers. However instead of wondering the unknown five students from Canadian colleges, John R. Kirby, Angela Ball, B. Kelly Geler, Rauno Parrila, and Lesly Wade-Woolley, all decided to find the answer by conducting a study among 117 students from the grades 1-3. Their main focus was to look into the development of interest in reading for beginning readers and observe its relation to reading. They measured reading interest by asking eight questions; 1. How do you feel about reading for fun at home? 2. How do you feel about getting a book for a present? 3. How do you feel about spending free time reading? 4. How do you feel about starting a new book? 4. How do you feel about reading through the weekend? 6. How do you feel about reading instead of playing? 7. How do you feel about going to the library or bookstore? 8. How do you feel about reading different kinds of books? They had the background assumption that students that love to read had better reading ability compared to students that can’t read so well. They monitored the students’ development in interest to reading followed by testing their reading ability along the way and then they compiled their findings. Their study concluded that reading interest had little to no effects on reading ability.…

ABSTRACT This is an exploratory study of the leisure reading habits and interests among secondary school students and their use of the school library facilities. Using simple random sampling, three hundred male and female students were selected from ten secondary schools. The survey instrument was designed in the form of a structured questionnaire comprising a series of sequenced questions. The findings highlighted some of the factors related to reading habits and interests in Sri Lanka. It is also hoped that this study will stimulate further in depth studies which may help to improve the reading habits and interests and to increase the value of school library and reading materials in general to students in secondary schools in Sri Lanka. The findings showed that the students read regularly outside school hours, but their reading appears to be confined mainly to text books. They preferred to read nonfiction over fiction material. Reading, therefore, was undertaken mainly for acquiring knowledge or for study purpose. Consequently they used the library mainly to study rather than read for leisure. Most have positive attitude towards the library but did not use the tools the library offered and expressed dissatisfaction with their library's collection. The results of this survey indicate several problems which need to be solved if the habit of reading is to extend beyond "reading to learn". Students also need to be made aware of the importance of the school library resources in their education and in leisure time. Library instructions need to be enforced to enable students to become more familiar with library utilization techniques so that the library resources could be more fully…
