A Letter to the Mayor
The mayor has to make a big decision--should some land in your community be used for a new shopping mall or for a park? Write a letter to the mayor telling what you think.

Serena Yang No.29 Alley 15, Lane 91 Sec 5 Xinyi Rd. Taipei 6/10/2013

Hao Lung Bin
Mayor Hao
Taipei City Hall
No. 1 Shifu Road, Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan

Dear Mr. Hao,
I am very delighted to hear that you would like to use some land in the Xinyi District to build new recreational constructions for the citizens. Personally, I think we should use the land to construct a park. Xinyi District is glutted with department stores already. I believe that citizens are able to obtain almost all of what they need or want in the shopping malls we currently have. Instead of building more shopping malls, parks are beneficial for individuals, the environment, and the district’s appearance.

First of all, I believe that Mr. Hao’s main goal for constructing new recreational structures is to let the citizens stay healthy, strong, and cheerful every day. Exercising is one of the most essential way to prevent people turning into runts and stay healthy. Of course, the people need a park to exercise. You might wrangle that we can just build fitness centers in the department stores. Please consider about the citizens who would love to exercise daily but cannot afford to go to fitness center every day. There would definitely be furor among the people who cannot go to the fitness canter because they would feel inferior (not having as much money). Not only about affordability, doesn’t it feel so much better to be outdoor imbibing fresh air and sunshine instead of trapped in a limited space? Also, constructing a park helps people to make more friends. While the children are playing together the adults get to talk to and know each other. This way, the people in the district can be more united. We do not want the people

However, the city will also have the money they got from selling the property to help build the park. By building the park, you are also addressing the growing budget deficit by creating jobs. For example, you can charge people for boat launching or have a small appliance for fishing and snacks at the park. I think this is the best decision overall because you get to build the business complex which will create jobs and bring other businesses. Also, by building a small park, you will create more jobs and help Rid economy grow. The city want lose any money because the park will pay for itself by having festivals, appliance store and boat…

Any growing city is always needing new improvements, as is the City Mountain Brook. For starters, I believe that the city should invest in railing alongside Cherokee and Overbrook Road to increase driver’s safety. The reason behind the railing alongside those roads is because they are beside steep hills and cliffs and if a car happens to run off the road it would fall off a cliff. That almost happened to some fellow peers of mine who were in a car crash over winter break. Luckily they didn’t go flying down the cliff because a tree had stopped them, but what if the tree wasn’t there? I wonder what would have happened but it probably wouldn’t have been good. Other than investing in railing on Cherokee and Overbrook road, I would like to suggest the purchase of new classroom furniture in the high school. As growing children, we need to treat our bodies right, and by having comfortable classroom furniture, we will be on the right track. Having comfortable classroom furniture will give every student, regardless of shape or size, the chance to fit in their seat comfortably during class. Not only will the new furniture be more comfortable and appealing to us students’ backs, but I believe it will create a more welcoming learning environment with a fresh, clean, modern and relaxing feel to it. I believe we should hold a campaign to raise money in order to buy new and improved classroom…

The sports park is old and falling apart. We need to improve the baseball field because the bases are gone and the fence is falling down. Get a better basket ball court because the hoops are getting worse and worse by the day. The nets on the hoops aren't even there they have fallen off and the wind blew them away. The reason why we need to improve the sports park is because some people go to the park to practice for a basket ball game or baseball game. Some people like to go there and play games with their friends.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

It is with great concern that I am writing this letter to address the public health of our community. Recently, there have been a number of children and adults who have strangely started to develop similar illnesses. The one thing each of these people has in common is that they all live right here in our community. My feels were that these sudden illnesses were not a matter of coincidence but instead a matter or poor practice. This feeling has proven to be accurate. Upon further investigation, it is has come to light that the reckless policies of our local gas company are endangering the health of our community. Contamination testing done on our water supply as well as soil tests shows extremely high amounts of a toxic chemical that is used by the gas company. This chemical that the company is releasing into our community has been linked to various illnesses that are similar to the ones experienced by our citizens. Interviews with two former employees of the gas company reveal that they were aware of this chemical leaking into our community water supply but the issue continually got swept under the rug. It was these employees belief that the company felt there was not enough of the toxic chemical being leaked to cause health problems. They are not aware as to how our local gas company came up with this irresponsible solution but we are aware as to how it has caused life-threatening illness among our community. Management at the company had no response when asked if they were aware of contamination so it is apparent that we must speak out as a community. Although not all of you have been affected by this shocking behavior, you are bound to be in the future unless we take the appropriate steps. We must unite together and demand changes in the company’s policies so that they are no longer poisoning the citizens of our tight knit community. We shall not give up this fight until we have reached a solution that keeps our health the…

    City Council Meeting

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…
