A Diamond Personality - 2
1. What factors do you think have contributed to Rodriguez's success? Was he merely "in the right place at the right time," or are there characteristics about him that contribute to his success?
The factors that contributed to Rodriguez's success are his personal values like Rodriguez being an entrepreneur and an optimistic individual. Another factor would be that Rodriguez bettered himself by attending community college receiving his diamonds grading certificate shortly after graduation. Working at a local jewelry store, Rodriguez gained knowledge of diamonds and used that information to open his own business acting as a connection point between buyers and sellers over the internet.
Along with all the characteristics Rodriguez possesses, Rodriguez was also in the right place at the right time. A girlfriend of Rodriguez's roommate suggested that Rodriguez go to work at a local jewelry store. This is where Rodriguez's knowledge of diamonds started and since Rodriguez (according to individuals who know him) is ambitious and never gives up on anything, Rodriguez was able to follow his dream and work harder at achieving it.

Alex Rodriguez is a 32 year old Miami native, and, having entered the workforce directly out of high school, currently holds down a job in New York City. Normally, at least for those entering the workforce right out of high school, attaining a good career is rather difficult. This is especially true considering that more and more employers are requiring prospective employees to attain at least a bachelor’s degree just to get into an interview room. However, Rodriguez, since the age of 18, has lived a rather comfortable lifestyle--- he never has had to worry about where is next meal is coming from, where to find shelter for himself and his family, nor has he had to rely on his monthly paycheck to sustain his family. What makes these facts even more interesting is Rodriguez’ work schedule--- he works only 7 months…

I think the one thing I absolutely disgusted by the most was his brother’s actions towards him. His brother treated him like a chew toy between two dogs. At one point in the novel Rodriguez escapes the gang and tries to convince his fellow gang friends to join them but leaving the gang to them meant leaving the only family they had ever had and ever known. You can tell that through Rodriguez’s style of writing is to inform the reader about what gang life is truly like, and the pain and suffering he went through.…

Every culture is different, and has different definitions of how to define a “Man”. But a common stereotype for a typical man is to be a hard worker. I can relate to Rodriguez in many ways. For example, from the time I finished Middle School my dad started stressing the importance of getting a job. He told me that if I was working and made my own money, he would treat me like an adult, a “man”. Although at the time I was naive and thought the idea of working was just silly, and a huge waste of time. I eventually thought about what my father had told me. I became very interested in the ideas my dad put in my head. I wanted to make him proud, and show him that I could do it, just like he had once done as a young boy. It was hard finding employment because of my age. So I took whatever work I could get. I did yard work, I babysat, and I started taking some of my neighbors dogs on walks. I was young, but I had already started to understand this feeling of being independent. Eventually my father “cut me off”, as in no more financial help. I was a sophomore in high school. I was still fed daily and given clothes from time to time. I also still had a roof over my head. But all of my “wants”, not “needs”, I had to…

Rodriguez faces a few tensions in his personal experience such as being a "scholarship boy" as oppose to a well rounded student and and his life at home compared to a more friendly home environment. Rodriguez says that "I was a very good student, I was a also a very bad student. I was a scholarship boy, a certain kind of scholarship boy. Always successful, I was always unconfident. Exhilarated by my progress. Sad. I became the prized student - anxious and eager to learn. Too eager, too anxious - an imitative and unoriginal pupil." ( Rodrigues #283 ) Rodriguez describes himself here as imitating his teachers too much and being a perfect student instead of thinking for himself and taking in the knowledge he is given by his teachers and analyzing it and putting it to use. He is unoriginal and and uninteresting compared to a student who can use their knowledge in their own way and gets more involved. The other tension Rodriguez faces his the tension he has with his family, mostly his mother and father. At home his mother and father both support and encourage what he is doing very much but they didn't like the fact that he would always be in his room and the fact that the only thing he was involved with was school. "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education." (Rodriguez #286) This quote shows that Rodriguez's amount of knowledge of the english language and other subjects he had compared to his parents and therefore he was somewhat embarrassed by them and it created a tough home environment to live in because he didn't communicate much with his parents. This contrasts the home environment where their is a strong relationship between the family and their is communication.…
