In the scenario where I would have to find someone to fill a position, I would find myself gauging each candidate for the qualities which suit the company’s needs. The job listing would state that the person who applies must be articulate, sophisticated, and knowledgeable in the fiber optic field. The position also requires the candidate to spend leisure time with perspective clients after 5:00 P.M. This particular aspect of the job might deter applicants, but would not affect my judgment towards a final decision. Since the sales are at an all-time low for the Fortune 500 Company, to me that means that a piece of this company’s fate is in my hands because the person I hire could possibly save it. After reading all of the profiles from some very qualified personnel, I believe that Jyoti of Wireless Retail Store would be best qualified for the position. While she did state she was single and available to travel and work long hours because of it, I would actually expect a married applicant to be more willing to do what it takes since they have a responsibility to support a family. If being away from family and loved ones isn’t something that a candidate could handle then I wouldn’t expect them to apply for the job in the first place. Another trait that stood out of Jyoti’s profile was that she trained other salespeople. This tells me that Jyoti is not only an expert in her field, but she is also a team player looking to improve the qualities of those around her for the benefit of the company. As a person this quality also leads me to believe that she probably also has good morals, but that is only an opinionated judgment. According to chapter 22 of the text, women are unfortunately still being confronted by a glass ceiling which keeps them from being promoted or earning more than a male

After reviewing all four candidates I narrowed it down to two. Being a human resource manager I have guidelines to follow on who would be the best option for the sales manager position. I need someone who is articulate, sophisticated, and knowledgeable about fiber optics. The position calls for traveling Monday through Friday and spending time after 5:00 with prospective clients. The first candidate I have in mind is Lynn, the IT manager and the reason why I chose her is because she is smart and sophisticated because she was first in her graduating class. Lynn has fiber optics experience, and doesn’t list anything special in her life that would keep her from being able to work the full hours for the position. The second person I have in mind is Jyoti, Manager of Wireless Retail Store. I am considering Jyoti because she is great in sales, and has high stats and tons of experience for this position. She also states that she is single and has a ton of free time to be able to do the traveling and staying later.…

Most people think that the world faces an overpopulation problem. But Phillip Longman argues otherwise in his book The Empty Cradle. He warns instead of a global baby bust. World population growth has fallen 40 percent since the late 1960s. The human population is expected to peak at nine billion by 2070, and many countries will see their population shrink long before that. Japan will have 49 retirees per 100 workers as early as 2005.…

Today 's management in the workforce is composed of all types of people verses thirty years ago when white males held a majority of upper-management positions in companies. These positions are now held by a mixture of ethnic back grounds and women who hold just as many if not more management positions then men. Just by looking at the changes in management demographics shows how important it is for people to understand cultural competency in the workplace. Dr. Roosevelt Thomas Jr. (1999) stated, "Diversity is the collective mixture of whomever we have in our workforce characterized by their differences and similarities" (p.11). Managers and supervisors must understand the characteristics of a diversity mature individual; they also need to be able to articulate the differences between affirmative action, managing diversity, understanding and valuing diversity to build skills that transforms awareness into productive and supportive workplace behaviors.…

Today, women represent almost half of the workforce in the labour department. There have been increasingly more opportunities for women to enter the labour market who are equally competitive in some fields as men. Despite the high amount of achievement and participation that women have made in the labor force in recent decades, they are still struggling with the access to the upper level positions in the organization. This barrier to vertical movement for women in the workforce is commonly known as “glass ceiling”. This metaphor of ‘glass ceiling’ represents the invisible and artificial barrier that women experience at some point during their progress toward high-ranking positions (Sampson & Moore, 2008). It tends to limit their advancement…
