Introduction
A worm gear is used when a large speed reduction ratio is required between crossed axis shafts which do not intersect. A basic helical gear can be used but the power which can be transmitted is low. A worm drive consists of a large diameter worm wheel with a worm screw meshing with teeth on the periphery of the worm wheel. The worm is similar to a screw and the worm wheel is similar to a section of a nut. As the worm is rotated the wormwheel is caused to rotate due to the screw like action of the worm. The size of the worm gearset is generally based on the centre distance between the worm and the wormwheel.
If the worm gears are machined basically as crossed helical gears the result is a highly stress point contact gear. However normally the wormwheel is cut with a concave as opposed to a straight width. This is called a single envelope worm gearset. If the worm is machined with a concave profile to effectively wrap around the wormwheel the gearset is called a double enveloping worm gearset and has the highest power capacity for the size. Single enveloping gearsets require accurate alignment of the worm-wheel to ensure full line tooth contact.

By joining together two or more gears of different sizes, both the speed and the torque are changed from the input gear to the output gear. The larger gear within a system will always move slower and have more torque than the smaller gear. Gear Ratio (GR) is a comparison between the driver gear, also called the input (connected to the power source), and the gear being driven, or the output. Below are four ways to determine the gear ratio in figure 1.…

As simple as it may seem, there are many different types and sizes of gears used in tons of complex machines. Sometimes they have straight teeth and sometimes they have curved or inclined teeth at various angles. They are connected in all different ways to move motion and force in machines. When they work, one gear wheel turns faster or slower than the other, or moves in a different direction. The difference of the speed between the two gears causes a change in the force given out. There are many different ways gears can be combined to be useful for various purposes. For instance, spur gears are two gear wheels intermeshed. These gears regulate the speed or force of motion and can reverse direction. Next, there are rack and pinion gears. They are comprised of one wheel, the pinion, and a sliding toothed rack. This allows a rotating motion to be changed into a back and forth motion. Rack and pinion gears are often used in steering cars. These and other gears are used in numerous complex machines. A washing machine is comprised of spur gears to turn the…

The traction gear is a small, round metal wheel with notches in it to increase its grip on the lip of the can. When it and the cutting wheel are pressed tightly against opposite sides of the lip of the can, the pressure against the surface of the traction gear causes it to grip the surface of the metal can when you turn the crank.…

From the fundamental of an engine, it is known that the pistons drive the main crank in the engine so that it spins. Idling, it spins around 900rpm (revolution per minute) and when the foot is pressed on the gas at maximum, it can reach 7,500rpm or even higher in certain cars. It is unrealistic to connect a set of wheels to the end of the crank because the speed is too high and too variable, and the user will have to stall the engine every time to stand still which is quite a difficult task. Gears are circular and have a form like ‘teeth’ which interlock with another gear to transmit power to and from the other gear. When two gears are meshed, one will be getting power from another source and transmitting it to the other gear. The ‘altered’ power will be available at the 2nd gear. Now when the two gears are meshed, one would be smaller in size and other one larger. If the larger gear often called helical gear gets…

While designing this multiple drive system there are many decisions to be made in order to successfully design the system according to the problem statement. The first is deciding whether to use a belt drive or a chain drive; one would realize that the system is operating at fairly low speed so a chain would be ideal. The next step to designing this system is to consider and analyze a speed for shaft A. Factors must be considered while deciding the speed of shaft A. The factors are that the speed of shaft A should be high enough so that the speed ratio of the gears is large enough, so that the gear sizes make a large enough distance between extrusion rolls. When designing this system one would choose around…
