Suddenly, rangers from the National park Service greeted us and asked “Want to learn about the cherry trees?”. “Sure,” we answered. I was so fascinated by them. When the park ranger was done speaking, we decided to go to the World war 2 Memorial.
We arrived at the World War 2 Memorial and was heartbroken when the ranger told us “405,000 people lost their lives in this war and the wall of gold pays tributes to them.” He also told us that theres a rainbow pool framed by 56 granite columns representing unity. “Look at that!” my friend told. With the wall of gold, there was a dedication reading

Between four bare, achromatic walls of Wisconsin Union Grove Veteran’s Home, a middle-aged choir conductor gazed nostalgically out the window of an unfamiliar bedroom. He reached for the ringing telephone, only to find that the entire right side of his body was paralyzed. His nimble organist fingers had twisted themselves into unnatural positions, and his musically inclined tongue failed to produce coherent words. Bottles of pills littered the counter, and an intravenous drip system towered over his pale figure. An unintelligible cry escaped his lips when a nurse entered the room and informed him of the ischemic stroke that had stolen his voice and mobility. Emotions flooded his pores, but the sensation of utter sadness was overpowering. As…

I was asked to talk about the 50-year anniversary of the Vietnam war. And as most of you can probably tell, I wasn’t alive 50 years ago, so I went to my grandfather who fought in that war and I asked him to recount his experience. I asked him if he lost any friends during that time. He responded with “Hunny, all the guys you are with are your friends. And it hurts to lose any of them.” He recalled for me one individual. Greg. He said “losing that one was hard.” He told me he was a good man who found a Vietnamese child that he wanted to take back to the states with him. My grandfather said that man was later killed in action and the child, lost track of. Ladies and gentlemen. 58, 220 American soldiers died in that war. To some, these numbers aren’t more than graphs, statistics, or numbers on a chart. But to the brave soldiers who fought, each number is a face, a name, a story or a memory. Every number, every digit matters. Let us not forget the 2.5 million soldiers who fought for us. Who fought against communism, against an ideal they felt to be…

Nationalism is a driving force behind politics and can be used by the state to change the populaces view on a certain subject. On July 11th it will be twelve years since I discovered the magical world of yuccas and mesquite trees. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I remember driving all the way down the road that seemed like miles and miles of nothing but wilderness. We seemed to have driven for forever. There were no houses or mobile homes or much of anything. Then we came to a dirt road, and I said “Daddy I hope we are not going to drive into there.” There looked like an unmarked, mysterious place. It was a new unfamiliar place that I would be the first to discover. As soon as we got out of the truck I started asking questions. “Daddy is there dinosaurs here?” Then he explained that I would have to go check for myself, so I made that my personal mission.…
