Word Learning Artifact
This artifact is a lesson that was created and delivered in a Fourth Grade Language Arts and Reading Class at Palm Spring Elementary School. The lesson was aligned with the Language Arts Florida Standards. The standards based content area objectives were presented and learned through literacy based strategies and activities which supported that understanding word meaning is essential to reading success. When developing this artifact I took into account the Gardner's theory about the multiple intelligences since I use a wide variety of strategies in this lesson such as music, cooperative learning, multimedia, inner reflection, graphic organizers, and technology based on the idea that individuals learn differently, at different rates, and by different methods, so they possess distinct forms of intelligence. I help them to develop effective word-learning strategies such as how to use dictionaries and other reference aids, how to use information about word parts to figure out the meanings of words in texts, and how to use context clues to determine word meanings. They could learn that to know a word well means knowing what it means, how to pronounce it, and how its meaning changes in different contexts. Students were stimulated to construct sentences providing clear examples of word meaning in context. This assignment mainly addresses the Reading Competency and Instructional Delivery and Facilitation indicators since I did relate and integrate the subject matter with life experiences. I sequenced the lesson and concepts to ensure coherence and required prior knowledge.     The purpose of this study is to find ways to help a child improve their reading test scores. How is it that a child who reads two grades above their level cannot perform well when it comes to taking state assessments? Is it the teacher or is the child playing around when it comes to taking tests? Maybe the child can read really well but does not comprehend what they read and they get nervous during the test, which would also cause them to score low. This child was chosen because he reads at least two to three levels above his grade, but on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test he scored below what he was expected to score.     An estimated twenty-two million people each year are added to the adult illiterate population in the United States (The Talking Page, 2007). To define the term “literacy” on its own results in an extremely vague and ambiguous meaning.
