Winston Churchill: Positive And Negative Criticism
“Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.”(Winston Churchill)
Growing up, I’ve had a great amount of people give me criticism, both positive and negative. Some of those people being family, friends, teachers, and even people I didn’t know. I haven’t always known how to accept criticism. I was like most others, often taking negative comments much worse than the positive ones. It is easy to be receptive to positive criticism but learning how to embrace and accept negative criticism as being constructive was a challenge for me, but a great one that I have grown to appreciate.

Criticism, whether it be positive or negative, is necessary for a person to change and for a person to grow. I’m sure that everyone can attest to the fact that they have been criticized by someone at some point in their life. Even though negative criticism does not always feel good, it causes you to take time and consider what the other person has said. Churchill compares criticism to the function of pain in the human body. When you experience pain in the body, it is letting you know that there is a problem somewhere causing that pain. When someone offers criticism, they are bringing your attention to something that they noticed was wrong or could be made better in their …show more content…
Every positive and negative input I’ve ever gotten from anyone has made me the person I am today and I am truly grateful for that. I now understand the importance of criticism. I thank God and everyone who gave their opinion to me for making me realize that everything you do is not always going to be perfect and that there may be a better way of doing things than what you are used to. Through my criticism, I have realized that you may go through obstacles, but it’s the good things that will get you through those tough obstacles. I believe that if people took advice as much as they gave it, the world would be a better

The quote I have chosen is, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm”. This is one of Winston Churchill's most well known quotes. This quote was said during his reign as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. It is unknown as to where this quote came from but I found it to be very captivating. I feel like Churchill is trying to get the point across that in life it is normal to not be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and each failure shapes you as a person. Churchill is saying that if you put your mistakes in the past without changing who you are, it makes you stronger and more successful than someone who fails to do so. Being afraid of failure gets you nowhere in life so Churchill is stating that everyone should strive with great enthusiasm in order to be their best self.…

To illustrate the point of this essay, it is not a good idea to respond to issues in a pessimistic way. “When handled in an unhealthy manner, it can cause irreparable rifts, resentments, and breakups” (Conflict Resolution Skills Segal). What this article is attempting to say, is that using a manner that is not very pleasant can ruin friendships, cause hatred towards…

Most people do not understand what it is like to get ridiculed for something that you love. When someone works hard to fit in with a certain crowd, but not accepted because they are not as good as others it can have a negative or positive impact. If someone were to take the criticism negatively, it may cause them to give up and no longer try. On the other hand, positive impacts may encourage someone to work hard to become exceptional. Working hard to become better at something is not easy, but the benefits can be tremendous. I personally have encountered this struggle.…

It is important to be objective when receiving feedback to possibly consider room for improvement. Sometimes you don’t see the errors or mistakes you missed; by receiving feedback you might be able to catch the errors or mistakes because the person that gave you the feedback caught. The one thing you need to consider is that all feedback may not positive. You need to keep an open mind and take into consideration that persons thought.…

The purpose and benefits of encouraging and accepting feedback from others is important to improve oneself in your work. Take notice of feedback in all its forms – put all feedback in a curiosity frame: ask yourself how you can use it to avoid failures, or to repeat successes. Feedback can be both formal and informal in nature. For example, formal feedback can be in a meeting and informal feedback can be between colleges asking how you were or how you did the last assignment.…

This first statement rings absolutely true. In writer’s groups writers come and go frequently. The ones that ultimately persevere in the craft are the ones that don’t have thin skins. Goldberg quotes a cherished Zen master as having said, “We must continue to open in the face of great opposition” (Rinpoche12). For this reason, the writer has to be able to separate themselves from his or her work. The work may in fact be an extension or reflection of the writer’s personal experience, but this is where the association ends. Unless the work is viewed through this lens, critique will always seem like a personal attack, instead of an aspect for improvement. Goldberg prefers first thoughts because she says, “First thoughts are unencumbered by ego”…

I was often degraded as my sister was the star child - intelligent, beautiful, and social. When people conversed with me, they would talk to me about my sister while taunting me for not being like her. These criticisms hurt my self-confidence in a great way. However, with time I realized that what people say should not be my focus, rather I have to achieve my own success with or without the support of others. I worked hard, got into the University of Houston, and now I have the top GPA in my graduating batch. Over time, I learned to be better at conversation and put more trust in God. I developed my personality to make sure I was not like those who spread negativity and caused others to feel bad about themselves. The person who I was 4 years ago was a depressed and insecure person, the person I am now is a strong and happy person. I learned that basing your life on the negativity people approach you with is not a good indicator of who you are. We have to make sure we grow constantly while ensuring others grow with us while keeping in mind that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. We are capable of success and we are all worthy beings, we must believe in our capabilities while supporting others. The impact of words are very real and very tough. Be kind wherever you find…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Through the words of Johnetta Cole “if you really know yourself, if you believe in who you are, it’s amazing how much criticism you can withstand”. Everyone in his or her lifetime has experienced criticism that has impacted their life in such a manner that has shaped their lives, for students in high school and college it’s an everyday occurrence. Student’s experiences in education should not be influenced based on where they come from financially, how they are perceived academically, and if they choose to pursue a higher education.…

All I can say of what I learned from this is that I tend to see the negative first. It took me far too long to realize that was not the best way to view the world. If I look for the negative first, that is all that I will find. I wish I could say that I follow my own advice, but I don’t. Sometimes it just seems easier to keep to myself. My grandmother taught me how important it is to tolerate people and certain situations. She told me showing people respect will get you a long way in life, as well as seeking help in hard times and facing problems instead of running away from them. Because of this, I try to see the good in people and over look the bad. When I have a problem I think of ways to solve it. When I cannot find a solution I ask for help before things get worse.…
