Why I Want To Pursue Dietician As A Career
In my childhood, I was always bombarded by comments about how insecure and tedious it would be to pursue dietician as a career. Without a proper registration system for clinical nutrition degree holders, most graduate students are not able to become a dietician and remains unemployed for years in Hong Kong. Despite dietician’s relatively high salary, most citizens think that the uncertainty is not worth the penny. Being born and raised in Hong Kong, a utilitarian society, I once thought that the above sayings is patently true. Instead, I should look to a more rewarding career. It also seemed to me that diet control is unnecessary, because life is short, one should eat what they want and enjoy their life. Not until my first visit to the hospital did I start to swing my pendulum the other way.
Walking in a chilly corridor with a strong smell of disinfectant was terribly sickening. Me and my mother were anxiously heading to the ward of my grandmother. When we entered the room, grandmother was neither connected to tubes nor pale. Expecting grandmother is fine and normal, I excitedly run into her chest. With her empty eyes, she calmly asked the doctor who am I. Shocked and heartbroken, the doctor explained to us that my grandmother had got a severe stroke and her memory was impaired. Through taking nutrition and biology courses, I acquired a deeper understanding on cases of diet-related diseases, which trains my alertness on what diseases and eating habits are interrelated. These courses have helped me to build a foundation for dietetics, which is essential to understand why a patient get sick and find out solutions to help them.
