Why I Hate Writing

On the first day of class, Dr.Ruiz wrote six questions on the board and the last question asked for our perspective on writing. My answer to this question was “I hate writing.” I’m an English Learner who came to the U.S. 5 years ago with no knowledge in English. Therefore, writing is not a likable assignment due to my lack of English skills and I did not have confidence when I wrote in English because I had a fear of people’s judgment about my English. Therefore, I was not an advanced writer when I enrolled in WRI 001. Nevertheless, I have grown substantially since beginning of the semester as a reader, writer, researcher and thinker.

The greatest challenge I had throughout the semester was engaging the readers and making it interesting enough
Annotation homework taught me how to think analytically and read critically to become a better reader. Learning various writing styles such as Toulmin Model of Argumentation, point-by-point or block methods, and annotated bibliography, opened the door for me explore different writing formats and learn various writing rules. Before, I was always caught in a five paragraph format when it came to writing essays but now I learned that there is no set amount of paragraphs to fully express my claims. Moreover, peer and faculty feedback helped shape my writing to become clear, with purpose, with better transitions and grammar. Researching assignments helped me to become proficient in the research process and explore online databases. Through class activities, I learned about the MLA format, critical reading, coherence/cohesion and proper citation. Every assignment was not easy and it was very time consuming; however, the process was worth it and it shaped me to become an advanced writer. This class was the most beneficial class among the other three classes that I took this semester.
