Why Homework Is Bad Analysis
Alexis Chapman
Mrs. Pike
English 101-B22
January 30, 2015 Why homework is bad Since I was in Kindergarten, I have had homework. I can honestly say that it has not helped me a tremendous amount, but it was crucial that I had at least a few homework assignments over the week. I currently nanny a second grader, Langley and a forth grader, Tanner. Every evening when they get off the bus Langley complains about how much homework she has and then Tanner excitedly states that he has none. This is confusing to me because I do not understand why a second grader has about four assignments a night and the forth grader never brings any homework home except to study for a test. Does it just depend on the teacher you have? I believe that there can

Family is important; especially parents, and when a child is missing quality time with his or her parents it could do emotional damage. When the weather is nice, children should be outside playing with friends, neighbors and family rather than sitting in the house at the kitchen table working out math problems. There have been many of my personal experiences and one’s I have witnessed, where a child could not enjoy the nice weather or go play and get exercise because of the amount of homework they had to do. There are not enough hours in the day for school, homework, playtime, dinner, bath/shower, family time, and then bed. On top of parent’s busy schedules, they have to do their child’s homework and projects. Homework is important to have to help students better themselves, but it should not be five nights a week. There should be optional assignments with teacher comments pointing out student’s weak subjects that students can take home and it will be for the parents to decide if and when their child will participate. Having a few mandatory homework assignments over the week would be fair to the children. It is important that teachers try to fix this problem, and start to focus on how many negative affects homework is having on many students and their …show more content…
As previously stated, there simply is not enough time in the day for everything a family must get done, and when you add homework to the mix of things, it just gets worse. Extracurricular activities are very important for children because it keeps them involved and active. Exercise is crucial for children because they need to release all of their energy, stay healthy and fit, and also relieve any stress that child could be feeling. If homework starts to take up to much time, students have to give up those activities because school and grades come first. It is important to have a healthy balance of everything and not be loaded down with work once you complete an eight-hour day of

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

When a child is in elementary school there are a number of things a parent can particpicate in with their child they are able to go on school field trips, eat lunch, volunteer or even attend class with their child. As the child gets into middle or high school, the options are limited to what the parent can do such as sporting events. Children may also decide that they no longer want their parents involved in school with them, because they may feel embarrassed around their peers. The child’s teacher overload can frustrate parents since most parents like it when their child has only a couple teachers to deal with instead of four to six all year round. Most parents can feel like having to communicate with so many teachers about their child is an overwhelming task and feel like the teachers should know their child better. If parents did not feel so over whelmed as their child’s education broadens, they might feel less of a threat coming from…

Homework doesn't take all day; realistically you will have time for other things. Homework allows practice for future endeavors, and teaches responsibility and organization skills. Homework allows children to work at their own pace, without peer pressure and afraid of falling behind during class. Homework allows time to study for tests, and go over work that you did in class. Reason being yes I understand that different classes have different papers and some have more worksheets than others but…

To begin with, homework is taking way family time and fun time from students. Because students get a lot of homework they no longer have time to spend time with their family or have their own free time. For instance, in the article titled “5 Reasons Why Homework is Bad for Your Child,” the author states, “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies.” The reasons that are stated in the article specifically, are examples of how homework takes away family time. School is supposed to only take up to 6 hours but with homework it no longer take 6 hours of school work but more. Therefore, students don’t have enough time to do there own things.…

Parents are meant to help children with many different issues that arise. However, when it comes to homework, should parents intervene? This controversial topic is a huge debate among teachers nationwide. Parents should not get too involved in their children's homework because it makes it difficult for teachers to access the students’ understanding of the concept taught, the student will most likely lose the responsibility to do their own homework then later start to depend only on their parents, and although some may argue that if parents get involved it will show the child that school is important, students need to realize their parents will not always be present to encourage them.…

One reason I think this is that kids go to bed late staying up doing homework or getting back from school events. Kids in our school district are so involved with extra circular activities, which I think is a good thing. We want our kids to be involved, but we also want them to be successful with their school work. My daughter Mariah told me the other night after her far away basketball game…

Whether it be because the kids are not getting their homework done and getting in trouble, or them learning to cheat. Having homework can cause stress on the kids that have a lot to do. They might have sports to go alongside their piles of homework. They learn to cheat off friends in order to manage their homework. In the article it states that when kids have a lot to do and little time to do it, they find alternative ways to do things to get them done faster. The main way they usually end up finding is to cheat of friends. (“5 Reasons Kids Need Homework and 5 Reasons They Don't”). Not only is cheating a bad thing, it also leads to all kinds of bad habits like laziness and lying. And when they do not get caught, they feel rewarded for something they did not do, encouraging more cheating. Home work does not increase overall scores of each class. In the article it states, “Researchers at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education found in a 2012 study that math and science homework didn’t correlate to better student grades, but it did lead to better performances on standardized tests. And when homework is assigned, the help provided by parents often mitigated any of the positive effects of the work. Critics of this type of parental involvement say it can be counterproductive because parents may assume too great a role and/or may not fully understand the lessons being taught” (Graham). This research shows that having homework is counterproductive because the parents end up doing too much of the homework for the kids. Also, the study shows that the overall grades of the kids did not increase. The other side of this argument may argue that they increased scores on standardized tests, but that does not matter when their grades are still not increasing. Stress can be a major problem for tots at a young age. When it comes to stress, 70% of students said they were often stressed…

Kids should have less homework because they are using all of their time at home doing homework instead of doing something productive. The average student gets around 75% of homework each day. In class you do lots of non-stop work. Then you go home and do the same thing for 5 days. All that work could easily put you under pressure which makes you do your homework all wrong and you don't notice until you get to school. All that pressure could also fail you on a test. When you're trying to do your homework you're also studying for a test.…

From a newspaper call-in column: [My opinion regarding the amount of homework a child receives is basically threefold]. **[I don’t believe the children should receive any homework whatsoever]**. One, (because) [the teacher has seven or eight hours during the course of the school day to instruct children and do work assignments with them, to review material for tests. [They do not need to be sending work home]. To me, [homework is an excuse for the teacher’s lack of ability to do their job properly]. Two, [there are too many children that come home with either no adult there] or [no adult with the ability to help them with their homework]. [That places too many children at a disadvantage compared to other children who have their parents there to help them with their homework]. Three, [an adult spends eight hours at work], [comes home], and [has…

Homework is an infringement on family time. Many of the big media that would otherwise say that homework is important also decry the fact that kids aren’t spending enough time talking with their families. It is not possible to create an atmosphere of deep family connection when the parents and the students are all working three or four hours a night at home. You need many hours’ together, playing games, reading books, fixing the house together, going to movies, cooking for friends to have a balanced family life. Being together only on weekends is a crime.…
