Who was responsible for the Rena Disaster?
Who I think is responsible for the ‘Rena Disaster’!

!

The Rena Disaster was a oil spill disaster that happened off the coast of Tauranga in New
Zealand on the 5th of October 2011. The crash was cause by the grounding of the Rena
Ship on the Astrolable Reef at 17 knots. I think that the captain of the Rena (Mauro
Balomaga) was the one responsible for the disaster. !

!

First of all, I think this because it was mostly the Captain’s decision to take the shortcut on the way to the Port of Tauranga and because of this decision, a national disaster occurred which still affects the people of New Zealand today. Secondly, the captain has admitted that he wasn't at his best at the time of the disaster, being drunk at the time. This pays a big part in proving who was responsible as he obviously wasn't focusing on what he was doing. Next, the captain well knows that he was sailing a ship carrying 1,368 containers as well as tonnes of fuel oil, should have been more careful in sailing the ship and avoiding shortcuts that might damage the journey. Lastly, he had a radar warning him about the impact as well as several other people informing him that taking the shortcut was a bad decision and in the end he ignored all the signals given. There were many moments where he could have done the right thing and this disaster would not have been a problem, but his mistakes have then affected a whole nation.!

!

Now, because of all the captain’s careless actions, the ‘Rena Disaster’ resulted into a massive oil spill affecting and damaging tons of wildlife such as birds and fishes as well as
New Zealand’s coastal environment, causing a huge loss in money and affecting people’s life in many different ways for the worst.
