What does not kill you does not make you stronger
After a near-death experience one might think “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” What they should be thinking about is what got them into a near-death situation in the first place. Several years ago I had been working in Europe for more than 200 days straight. I was sick of the cold, dreary weather I was forced to endure day in and day out in the north of England. So when my friends suggested that I join them on vacation to go scuba diving in the Cayman Islands, I jumped at the chance to go. What I didn’t know at the time was that I would learn a valuable lesson - to trust my instincts and not to give into peer pressure. The first day on the island we went to one of the many dive shops that dotted the harbor along the port town of Stingray City. Although we were able to book three days of diving, we had to wait until the next day to make our first dive. We were all anxious to do something after the long plane ride. My friend Rex suggested that we go snorkeling in the coral reefs off of Seven Mile Beach. Personally, I thought that it was a bad idea. I was not a really strong swimmer, and we would be alone without a boat to pick us up if we got tired. But Rex and his brother Doug would not let go of the idea and pressured me into going, and against my better judgment I agreed to go. The turquoise blue water of the Caribbean Ocean was warm and calm. I was surprised by the gentle slope of the seabed and how far we were able to walk out before we could no longer touch the bottom. We were soon diving in 15 feet of water. The vibrant colors of the coral, sponges and exotic fish was mesmerizing. My friends wanted to venture out into deeper water where the ocean was distinctively darker; where the larger fish could be found.
I was already uncomfortable where we were, given that the shoreline was now some 600 yards behind us. I definitely did not want to out any farther. Rex said “You can do what you want, but we’re going farther

GRAND CAYMAN REMINDED ME OF THE CLASSIC SEA SIDE TOWN, LAID BACK ATMOSPHERE, WINDY SALTY SEA AIR, THE ONLY THING MISSING WAS A LIGHTHOUSE. IT WAS A VERY PEACEFUL FEELING THERE. I HAD BOOKED AN EXCURSION WITH A PLACE CALLED CAPTAIN RON’S AND WE WENT OUT BY BOAT FIRST STOPPING AT THE BARRIER REEF AND THEN ENDING THE DAY BY SWIMMING WITH STINGRAYS. AT THE REEF ONE OF OUR GUIDES WAS AN EXCELLENT FREE DIVER AND HE ASKED US ALL TO HOP INTO THE WATER WITH HIM AND ONCE WE DID HE TOLD US ABOUT A ‘FRIENDLY’ NURSE SHARK THAT LIVED IN THE AREA HE WAS HOPING WOULD STOP BY (THANK GOD SHE DIDN’T) AND AFTER ASKING US ALL TO PUT ON OUR SNORKEL GEAR HE DOVE DOWN ABOUT 20 FT AND COAXED A HUGE MORAY EEL OUT OF ITS DEN. IT WAS A GOOD 5 FT LONG AND VERY TEMPERMENTAL, IT SCARED ME TO BE REAL HONEST. ONCE DONE THERE WE WERE ON TO THE STINGRAYS. DID YOU KNOW THAT GRAND CAYMAN HAS THE ONLY HUMAN FRIENDLY POD OF STINGRAYS IN THE WORLD? WE FED THEM AND PET THEM AND THEY SWAM RIGHT UP AGAINST US. WE WERE TOLD THAT KISSING A RAY ON THE HEAD WAS 7 YEARS GOOD LUCK. I DID IT AND SO FAR I’TS BEEN 4 YEARS AND I CAN TELL YOU THERE IS NO TRUTH TO THAT MYTH. LOL. SO AFTER ANOTHER WHOLE DAY IN THE WATER WE WERE BACK ON THE SHIP AND HEADING FOR…

Being able to go on the Key Largo trip this year would be amazing! I remember hearing my cousins and even some friends that have gone in the past years talk about how much fun they had, and how it was a once in a lifetime experience. They told me that once the opportunity came around to take it, so I did. I can remember my first time ever snorkeling. I was six years old vacationing with my family in the Bahamas, Nassau to be exact. I can remember my sister and me holding hands, counting to three, jumping off the boat and into the water without a care in the world. It was so much fun free diving down to the reefs, but we weren’t allowed to touch anything or we would be in big trouble. They also gave us each a bag of food to feed the fish in hopes that they would get close to us. Once we were all in the boat one of the tour guides jumped in the water and brought a starfish and conch shell on board. At first he wouldn’t let me touch it because I pronounced the name wrong. The animals were returned safely to the water and placed back on the reefs. The next year’s vacation was the Dominican Republic. This was also the first time I went swimming with sharks and stingrays. The only thing I did not like about this trip was the fact that the sharks and sting rays were stuck in a cage. But it was also the first time I got to swim with dolphins in a controlled environment to ensure no harm to the animals or myself. The last vacation was snorkeling in Cancun Mexico. Even my grandma went on this trip with us. This was the last time I went snorkeling, other than in my pool, but it’s not the same experience. By going on this Key Largo trip I am hoping to relive and make some of my own memories my senior year. I am also looking forward to experimenting and observing all the different animals Marine Lab has to offer. Maybe I can also find a career in the marine biology field seeing…

Recently I faced a near death experience, and this assignment has brought back some of those feelings of mortality, and questions like I am satisfied? However, after I spent more time on this assignment, I felt an acceptance come over me, because I realized I lived life for enjoyment of myself and others. This realization helped me decided how I wanted to die, and I decided to base it off of how I actually could. Some details were hard to describe about my life, because, while I like to plan everything out for my life, like a road map, I choose to leave somethings to the wind. In all, I’m left with a queer feeling of calmness and happiness, which I hypothesize is due to a belief in meeting all my life…

When we got there we each had to fill out papers clearly stating our medical information but, of course, my parents had to sign too. Once everything had been signed we had to wait about thirty minutes for everyone else to get there. I was furious because we had to wear a stupid life jacket and I complained the whole time, saying stuff like I look stupid in this or I don’t wanna wear it. Finally after a while I had finally gotten over it and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery. After everyone had arrived there was almost over one hundred people! I thought it was going to be a group of about ten. After we went over the rules we had to board a bus to the river itself, which was about forty minutes or so. Once we had made it there we were all told to get into a raft and sit on the edges, but, of course my dad was in charge telling us all what to do. After, we had done a couple of rapids it was finally time for a swim break, right away I had fell out and scraped my knee and to make it even worse the water…

My family was given an approximation of how much more time he had in this world. We gathered around my grandfather’s hospital bed, and while he slept, I reflected about listening to him talk about how he would like to spend his last few months, and about how he talked about regretting not spending time doing the things he loved. I thought, “If I knew I only had a certain amount of time left, how would I spend it?” I realized that I only did have a certain amount of time left, and that the way I was spending that limited time was basically wasting my life. That was the depressing yet revealing truth, and it was the slap in the face I needed. I told myself that I needed to stop being useless, and understood that I had given up on trying to be useful. My grandfather inadvertently put me back on…

The statement “that which does not kill me, makes me stronger,” has become a very well-known and powerful quote in American culture. It has even inspired new forms of the quote as well as songs. The song “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson states that “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller, doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone, what doesn’t kill you makes a fighter…” She is singing exactly what this statement is about. Kanye West also wrote a song titled “Stronger,” that uses the same motivational quote, in which he says “that that don’t kill me can only make me stronger.” He also wrote that it “makes us harder, better, faster, stronger..” Just like these two iconic American singers, I too agree with the statement that…

We eventually had the idea to go swimming. I love swimming in Arizona because the water is not cold in and back at home we don’t have a pool. The things I don’t like is that we have to wait for an adult to watch us and in the daytime the ground is so hot with red ants crawling all over as we walk to the pool. Once we finished changing to our swimsuits we all rushed out the door into the warm dark night. Shaun immediately jumped into the turquoise water lit up from the one light at the bottom splashing my family. Gabe and I then put our towels on the closest chair to us and jumped after…
