My Responsibility to America

“To be an American for me means freedom and justice. I also think being an American is a big responsibility.” This is the response of 10-year-old Neil from Wisconsin when asked the question, “What does it mean to be an American?” Neil is right; Americans have responsibilities that are imperative to living in America and helping the United States be prosperous and successful. If everyone were to learn and follow these obligations, America could be the utopia it was meant to be. These certain responsibilities are: teaching responsibility, participating in voting, and supporting and defending the Constitution.
One of the responsibilities among the many others, is teaching about this said responsibility. Without the Constitution, the U.S. would be under tyrannical law. I say this because without the first amendment (which is, in fact, in the Constitution), we wouldn’t have freedom of religion that means that you would have to practice whatever religion the government wanted you to. Without freedom of speech, we would be forced to say what the government wanted us to against our own will, etc. Without the Bill of Rights (which is in the Constitution too), the government could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted which gives them too much power, which is a tyranny. So again, how does the Constitution guard against tyranny? By giving us human rights that we are allowed to do as a U.S. citizen.…

constitution will be the cement layer of our nation. Only after the cement has been laid can you build upon it. Likewise, only after the U.S. has ratified the constitution, will we be able to build on top of it. So do not deny, ratify! If the Constitution is ratified, then there will be peace and happiness in our land.Think about it. If we did not have committees during the war, then could we have won? If we fought in disarray, with no order, no system, could we have won? The answer is no! Likewise, without any order in our government, we will never be able to battle our future problems! So do not deny, ratify! The Constitution offers America a stronger government, which will lead to peace in our country. Tyranny will never be possible again because of the system of checks and balances which is in the Constitution. Now, power is always kept in check. No one will be able to tromple over us the way that King George III did. Our country can prosper, and be the envy of the world! But we need the support of our citizens! An American is defined by The Oxford Dictionary as “a native or citizen of the United States.” An American can be many things; with the extensive amount of opportunities that are available to not only the native citizens, but also the immigrants and their families. In his farewell address, Ronald Reagan spoke of John Winthrop when he said America was like “a shining city on a hill” and its inhabitants like “the early Pilgrims” that first stepped foot on this rich American soil many years ago.
