Gone are those leisurely picnic days with the budding of malls all over the country. People have lesser time and seek entertainment, food and shopping all at one place. Malls make a convenient outlet for us. Our family recently visited the Pacific Mall, (Ghaziabad) .
Pacific Mall, (Ghaziabad) is amongst the most happening malls in the city. There are multi-cuisine food courts, multi-plex cinema and shops of all kinds under one roof. Mother shopped enthusiastically for monthly rations. We now moved onto shopping for clothes for Diwali. There were so many bags. We had to go down to the parking to put them into our car!
Shopping always makes me hungry. We now moved on towards the multi-cuisine food courts while my sister and I preferred to gorge on pizzas, our parents preferred diet coke with sandwiches and cold salad. Now food usually makes one lethargic and we needed to rest. Still shopping had to be done. So we opted to view the Harry Potter movie showing at the multi-plex. It was a lovely movie. My sister slept through half of it.
The time was apt for tea before we could take on another bout of shopping. This time we shopped for shoes and accessories. The sweet mart had an assorted range of toffees and jujebes. Very artistically molded chocolates and peppermint were in shapes of animals and dolls. Shopping had just begun to get better. I love visiting malls.

    The Mall

In Alan Brinkley’s essay The Mall he explores the history of shopping complexes in the United States and gives us insight on the different kinds of complexes. The mall started off as a shopping center. The first shopping center was the Country Club Plaza, opened in Kansas City in 1924. The shopping center soon increased in size and became small “strips.” In 1956, the first enclosed, climate controlled shopping opened in Minneapolis and was called South Dale Shopping Center many cities. The malls spread and began to have similar aspects of the downtowns that they were rapidly displacing, but they were safer. Soon after that malls started being built in many cities. The malls were still increasing in size and they were begging to add movie theaters, video arcades, bowling alleys, restaurants, and hotels. “In cities and towns in every part of America, malls became not just a place for shopping, but often centers of a much-altered community life as well” (Brinkley 115). Malls became like little cities with their own police that were private security forces. For the most part they were able to keep undesirable customers off the premises. Mall evolved into self-contained imitations of cities, minus many of the troubling abrasive features of downtowns. Malls set out to be perfect urban spaces mostly having white middle class women in mind. Many teenagers began to cling to the malls instead of other hang out spots such as street corners, parks and downtown. The mall became a universal shopping center that attracted everyone.…

Driving down Peach Street, there were many visible signs informing shoppers of how to reach the mall. It was very easy to exit the highway and reach the mall with no confusion and stress free. The Millcreek mall has an enormous amount of parking choices surrounding the mall with many different entrances. The one of twelve entrances eliminated the need to cluster parking spaces and promoted cars to spread out, allowing for a closer spot to the door. The entrances made it every wheelchair accessible with ramps and automatic doors. This positively contributed to my trip due to the fact my father is in a wheelchair. The accessibility and the ability to easily find the mall further improved my shopping trip to Millcreek Mall.…

Although, this is the only part of his essay with actual number facts, his remaining opinions are interesting as well. Farrell states, "Currently, America's shopping centers (most of which are malls) generate more than a trillion dollars in annual sales…more than half on the nation's retail activity." Just the though of one trillion of anything is an overwhelming amount to think of, especially in reference to how much money is actually spent at the mall per year. The other numbers, such as millions of people being employed and billions of square feet of leasable space add to the extent of what malls are becoming and continue to intrigue the reader. Lewis also states facts, but that of which he has gained through interviews with people who are often at the mall. Farrell used his factual numbers as a way to capture our attention so we would pay attention to his ideas; while Lewis used his factual information as the focal point of his essay. Ira Zepp uses his facts by referring to Eliade and Wheatley, as well as referring to architectural designs. He notes figure 10.3, which says "Park City, Lancaster PA. This mall reflects the many circles of a rose window, the quadrilateral design of a mandala, and the floor plan of a typical cathedral or basilica. The center of this mall in inescapable."
