Vigilante Justice In The Film The Dark Knight

The film ‘The Dark Knight’ directed by, Christopher Nolan, is a film about a League of Shadows that has been destroyed, but when a criminal mastermind who calls himself The Joker comes in to takes over the crime mob. Batman returns to battle his greatest threat yet. But with half the police force opposing but, as usual Batman manages to finish it off. The Dark Knight clearly shows and proves the theme of Vigilante justice and the main idea people or a group of community should not take laws on their hands as I could make a positive impact, or a really negative impact in a wide community. The Joker forces Batman to decide who to save, it was between his love Rachel or the Harvey the White Knight. Rachel ends up dying and Harvey end up getting horrific burns to half his body. Seen through the use of music. Razor blade running up and down piano wires create tension and panic feeling for the audience. This helps the audience to understand how important this scene is in the movie. The situation forces Harvey Dent to change from white night to something evil. We start to see there is positive and negative in all human beings it all need to descend when something terrible happens. This is because he lost the one he loved, due to that he loose hope and faith in good. This is shown through the use of the dialogue “Do you know what it’s like to lose someone you love? To tell them it’s going to be alright when you know it’s not.” This shows the audience that the character of Batman would chose to save someone for personal reasons rather than someone that could help others. It shows that he isn’t selfless as we think he is, he doesn’t have personal motives. This reminds me of a quote once many years ago “True love is selfless. It is prepared to sacrifice.” People who truly love each other can scarifies their lives, they do it without a second thought as they can’t live without that person which is truly close to their lives. This scene is important as it teaches me the capability of the character of Batman, and Harvey as he lost control over himself and turned for good to evil due to the loss of his loved one.
