A joint cast from Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School were recently involved in a production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The cast, led by Gilbert Stalinsfield as John Proctor and Greta Nash as Elizabeth Proctor, was able to captivate the audience for an the entirety of the performer. Director Anne-Marie Brownhill’s interpretation of the play, while short, allowed for each actor to contribute his or her own ideas to the story without removing the overlying theme of the empowerment provided through lies and playing on people’s fears. Each actor showed a deep understanding of the plot and was able to convey the message about McCarthyism and the symbolism of the witch hunts for the way people were suspected and persecuted in the 50s when McCarthy was most influential. Miller’s work successfully illustrates the parallels between the series of events that occurred in the late 1600s known as the Salem Witch Trials and the events that had been occurring during the time that The Crucible was written in the 1950s. The combined cast from Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School were incredibly impressive in their demonstration of these issues and the effects that these…

I watched the film Vegucated and overall I thought the film was educational but very graphic. Watching the scenes with the slaughter house were very eye opening to what we do to these animals all because we want to eat meat and dairy. It was just very sad to watch and it made me wonder if all of this was necessary and do we really need meat and dairy to survive? I also like how it follows the lives of three people as they go through the transition of becoming vegan or vegetarian. I also didn’t know that some foods were considered vegan like Oreos, cookies, and pancake mix because I consider them junk food and not very healthy. I wish the film talked about going on a plant-base diet and what kind of foods we should eat and the benefits of that…

V for Vendetta in many ways is a movie that has been done before. It presents a post apocalyptic landscape (ex: 1984 (1984), Clockwork Orange (1971)) where a totalitarian leadership rises from the ashes of chaos offering salvation, only to deliver oppression to the masses while demanding blind obedience in return, or else! In this society/film we are given the various archetype villains to hate (Chancellor Adam Sutler, Mr. Creedy), they are the ones we expect in such a film, and every conspiracy theorist believes is behind the plots past, present and surely future. To every archetype villain there must exist a counter, and archetype hero, or in V’s case the anti-hero. V for Vendetta not only gives us a glimpse of the world we may create through our complacency, but also a hero we long to become when social constraints are cast off.…

Before the Constitution, before the freedoms we enjoy now, all we had was a monarchy who used the American colonists for Britain’s gain. V for Vendetta shows us a world where simple freedoms such as speech and assembly, now gone and replaced by a chancellor and a government who eavesdrop on people’s conversations in the name of national security. Many scenes and actions of the movie mirror that of America’s past events. However, this movie was meant to show totalitarian government. The entire nation was being controlled from media right down to curfew. People were not allowed to criticize or question the king or Parliament, and there was no such thing as privacy. People had to constantly pay more and more for necessities.…

V for Vendetta (V4V) is the first film by director James McTeigue and was released in 2005. V4V is set in a very near futuristic London which is now under control by a very strict & fascist government which controls what the public believes through their materialised media network. One night, London is rocked by a bombing of the crown court followed soon by a mysterious character simply named ‘V’ taking over the news network and revealing his agenda to the public. A determined experienced detective is on the trail of ‘V’ but also finds out himself about the corruption within the government and a personal vendetta that V holds against the government. The way the narrative is delivered can easily be described as mainstream because of how the lives of the main & supporting actors change within the period of the film, for example the detective at the beginning is at peace, he is then exposed to trouble & corruption & then at the end he returns to peace after all, this can be described as a ‘Equilibrium – Disturbance – Equilibrium’ which is usually evident within movies with a ‘mainstream’ narrative. I think that a film with this type of story is best told with a mainstream, straight forward narrative because in the film there are many time gaps which are not so obvious for example the character eavy leaves ‘V’s hideout for quite some time but returns within 5 minutes of the film, even though she had been gone for months. Since it is obvious this film was aimed at mainstream audiences, films with a similar plot (1984, Akira, Oldboy) have never been too popular with mainstream audiences but because of V4V’s modern, stylish & cool visual combined with its appealing mainstream storytelling techniques it has become more popular than most within its unique genre.…
