Values-based Education for creation of awareness on Non Revenue Water and promotion of good sanitation practices in Secondary Schools of Uganda.

Abstract

Only 30% of Ugandans have access to improved sanitation; however this low statistic has been highly attributed to culture, mindsets and attitudes of individuals. The cultural uprightness of the Ugandans has also been questioned as part of the root of the NRW problem and according to the Water Herald, high levels of water theft are likely to be positively correlated with high levels of corruption which basically is irresponsible behaviour.
Applying Values-based Education as an innovative approach to address these behavioural challenges through organized WATSAN School clubs will bring about the desired impact of positive change of mindset and attitudes towards sanitation and Non Revenue Water.
From the social perspective, Values-based Education promotes effective learning and underpins the continuous improvement of personal, social, moral and economic wellbeing. It is an investment in individual capability and self-responsibility and its product, therefore, promises significant value to society.
Effective teaching of values is measured not by an individual’s ability to define values, but by its impact on their behaviour.
