Values and Expectations of Dating in Different Generations
People want to date because they see that everyone else is dating and they think they’re happy in a relationship. Or they are just very lonely and feel they need to have someone by there side to comfort them and make them happy. In my grandparents generation the couples were faithful and most likely would marry their first true love. There generation came with a lot of responsibilities and rules concerning being with another person. Basically my grandparents and previously generations is where true love began. In my parents generation things where a bit different they didn’t have to follow so much rules. They could get away with a lot of more things basically hey had more freedom when coming to dating. In my generation we can say things have gotten a little out of hand people tend to date the same person and they truly don’t find a connection with there partner. We can say my generation has came down to dating whoever just to say your in a relationship with someone. There is a major difference in how past generations viewed relationships compared to now
In my grandparent’s generation, my grandfather first laid eyes on my grandmother while horse back riding. My grandmother was picking corn at her father’s cornfield near my great grandfather’s ranch. My grandfather couldn’t believe that he had seen such a beautiful girl he said it felt like a dream and he had to make my grandmother his. My grandfather could not resist the fact that he couldn’t take his horses out to walk everyday so he began to make lies up that the horses needed to be rode more. My grandfather would ride past my grandmother’s cornfield and wait just so he could catch a glimpse of her. After seeing her there my grandfather went to his parents house to ask her on a date, but before he could take her out my grandfather had to get permission from her parents. They were both really young at that time, with permission towards the relationship my grandfather and grandmother fell in love shortly after.

My father was twenty years old when he met my mother. On horseback, he and his brothers were making their way home from a hunting trip. Riding through the forest and meadows, they came to a house just north of Cedar Creek and about a mile east of the Tom Covington place. The house was less than two miles from where the Rodgers family lived and although my father knew the occupants of the house well, he had never seen the girl who was sitting on the front porch; yet, he was determined to learn more about the young lady whom he believed to be the prettiest girl he had ever seen.…

As mentioned before, the process of dating has drastically changed over the past thirty years. One could argue that the respect and value of dating is not exactly what it used to be. In the 1980s, dating would actually involve going on many dates and getting to know a person before committing to an exclusive relationship. In 2013, if a young man is interested in a young woman, he looks at her Facebook profile and follows her Twitter posts. Then after talking for a week or two over text messages, they are in an exclusive relationship. The concept of dating, which can be defined as going out on dates to see if there is a possibility of a relationship, is gone. In present time, once a couple is exclusive they may go to dinner together, see movies, go to a concert, etc., but these activities were not done as a part of the courtship.…

In ‘’Dating and relating in the Internet Age,’’ Ted Sawchuck argues that ‘’ each stage of the dating process is influenced by Facebook, on our campus, not all the changes have been positive.’’ He explains that how in the University of Maryland, people get someone’s name; look him or her up on Facebook; and then they use that information to decide how to proceed. Also after using Facebook to check out someone, he decent an idea of whether the person she or he is a probable friend or possible romantic interest. Sawchuck talks about how on Facebook someone can be nervous to talk to someone in real life, but because of Facebook two people can talk online. In which this Facebook send by one person can be drafted and edited and rewritten and shown to friends before sending, than approaching the person in real life, so it does have…

Choosing a life partner is probably one of the most important decisions one could make in their entire lifetime. It could either make one’s life abundantly happy, or exceedingly miserable. Standing at the alter and saying “I do” is probably the easiest part of it. The process before that special day is where it is challenging. “Do I truly love this person?” “Is he/she the right one for me?” These are the usual questions asked by modern couples before they wed. But in the 1800s, when Pride and Prejudice was written, the only question that filled the minds of single men and women was, “Will this person be beneficial to my social and/or financial status?” This is the one of the most significant differences between dating and marriage in the 1800s, and dating and marriage in our contemporary world.…

“He and I are the only two divorced guys we know and having both come out of long-term marriages at about the same time and now finding ourselves in this bizarre Neverland of mid-life dating; we are the Lost Boys, the blind leading the blind in a land where the one-eyed man is king, if only we could find him and learn. But we haven’t, so we improvise because our prior dating experience dates so far back it’s listed in Webster’s under courting.”…

Even to this day, I don't know how my grandma had so much love for someone who she could barely remember. Yet, since my grandma's condition was bad I naturally helped out my family with my great grandma. I would bring in and out sodas for her since she had a mad addiction to the fizzy drink, and sometimes I would bring her hot meals. Even though doing all of that was great, my favorite thing to do for her was to keep her company. On the most beautiful of days, we would go out and sit on the neon yellow swing set in front of our house in early afternoons when the leaves were turning a beautiful shade of brown and the weather was just the right temperature. The wind sang alluring songs in your ears as the branches of the lush trees danced to the melody. I can picture it just like it was yesterday. The pond next to us glimmered a light blue color as the swing squeaked in glee. She would sing the same tune each time and i would drift into a world of peace and tranquility where nothing else mattered at that moment. But as a little girl, I took those special moments for granted. I was too oblivious to know that good things don't last forever, they never…

Since I was a little kid she had been a constant in my life. Every holiday, every family reunion, every birthday, she would always be present. At family reunions, she would be engaged in conversation at the daily breakfasts and dinners, at every birthday party she would be there when the presents were opened and the cake was eaten. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would always bring her famous deviled eggs and would be playing with the children. Near the end she would almost always be asleep and covered in blankets on the couch, until her family needed her. But perhaps the strongest memory I have of her was only between us. Our family was visiting Stillwater for the day, for what reason I can’t remember. Being young at the time I was always excited to have a ride in my grandparents’ van, especially if she was there. We were sitting in the very back, and she was talking to me about something which I only now see the profoundness of: her own mortality. She told me she wanted to live to see me graduate high school, a dream which she wouldn’t live to see to fruition. In telling me this I realize now that she was confiding in me her fear of death, a fear which at the time I had no concept…

In my life, I found a connection with the sociological article, Family Structure History and Adolescent Romance. When I first decided to reflect on this social conflict in personal life, I was still trying to figure out the situation. I could not understand how dating this man was such a bad decision, or why it made my parents so angry. When I was a younger teenager, I was scared of what my parents would think when I was dating a boy, so I dealt with it was by not dating anyone. My mom told me to pray for my future husband and I remember laying in bed around ten years old thinking that it sounded cool to pray for my future husband, but that it was so far down the road. Previously, in my Sophomore year in high school, I struggled with…

So I begin with my grandparents from both my mother and father’s side. My grandparents from my mother’s side both are in heaven. Interestingly enough they both passed on the 17th which is interesting; they were also a few years apart in age! I asked my mother if my grandparents had ancestors from places other than Dominican Republic; she stated my grandfather’s mother was Puerto Rican, and their parents migrated from Spain. Both of my grandparents had a lot of health issues. They both have had a history of asthma and problems breathing. My grandmother had more than one issue with her health. She had skin cancer and never attended to it. My grandmother was close with all of her nieces and nephews. I was really close with her and she was one of the people who inspired me with school. They eventually migrated to the United States but had all of their children in the Dominican Republic.…

My great-grandmother, who is ninety-five years old, recently sent me a photograph of herself that I had never seen before. While cleaning out the attic of her Florida home, she came across a studio portrait she had taken about a year before she married my great-grandfather. This picture of my great-grandmother as a twenty-year-old girl and the story behind it have fascinated me from the moment I began to consider it.…
