Personal Narrative: How My Grandma Changed My Life
My grandma's condition wasn't anything but hard for me and my family to deal with. Everyday with her was a roller coaster that held many twists and turns and couldn't stay on the track. If you didn't hold on tight, you’d thrown off. You never knew what she would remember each morning that she woke. Some days she would know the date and she was aware of her surroundings, while other days (which weren’t so great), she'd be back in time when her husband was alive and she’d call for him. Then she’d be puzzled as to why he wouldn't call her name back. When my mom would bear her the bad news he has been gone for years, my great grandma turned as silent as a mouse for the remainder of the day, wallowing in her sorrow. Yet, as her memory faded, mine …show more content…
Even to this day, I don't know how my grandma had so much love for someone who she could barely remember. Yet, since my grandma's condition was bad I naturally helped out my family with my great grandma. I would bring in and out sodas for her since she had a mad addiction to the fizzy drink, and sometimes I would bring her hot meals. Even though doing all of that was great, my favorite thing to do for her was to keep her company. On the most beautiful of days, we would go out and sit on the neon yellow swing set in front of our house in early afternoons when the leaves were turning a beautiful shade of brown and the weather was just the right temperature. The wind sang alluring songs in your ears as the branches of the lush trees danced to the melody. I can picture it just like it was yesterday. The pond next to us glimmered a light blue color as the swing squeaked in glee. She would sing the same tune each time and i would drift into a world of peace and tranquility where nothing else mattered at that moment. But as a little girl, I took those special moments for granted. I was too oblivious to know that good things don't last forever, they never

I had to drive at high speeds to get away from her because she was chasing me in her car. I later called Marshall to check on him, he admitted that he felt as though…

We would constantly color together in coloring books, and make friendship bracelets and necklaces out of blush and lavender plastic beads. My Grandma Vita was engulfed by an abundance of in the stress midst of her last pregnancy. Case in point, by that time she had three children, her father was a recovering alcoholic, and her mother was astonishingly ill. She had been battling pneumonia for years. In turn, the stress lead her to smoke throughout Aunt Dori’s trimesters. Therefore, my aunt was born two months premature. The NICU physicians knew Aunt Dori would have some complications, but it was her underdeveloped lungs that caused major problems. The day after she was delivered, she stopped breathing. As a result of the deprivation of oxygen to her brain, pieces of her cerebellum, part of the brain that controls the regularity of muscle movements, died. Hours later, doctors confirmed she now has Cerebral Palsy (CP). To be more specific, she is an a-spastic quadriplegic, which means her muscles are always slightly contracted, and she is not able to walk correctly because of it. Some CP does not affect speech or mental capacity. Luckily for Aunt Dori, it affected neither. As a child, I never understood why she was different than my other aunts, besides the fact she was in a wheelchair. I thought her twenty-four hour care takers had been just other friends coming to visit and sleep…

I am her oldest child. I remember that young woman with a quick temper who could yell when she needed to. Now having my own children, I know that no one sees your worst sides like your children do. But I also watched her change, with the death of her own parents when she was in her 20’s, through the loss of a son, and through her battles with cancer. With each sorrow, mum grew in wisdom and strength, she reached out in ways that I am only still becoming aware of. She spoke with other mothers who lost sons and daughters, she knew the pain, she knew how awful that could be, and she knew how to comfort, hug, and cry with those who had lost one of their own. Through that loss she gained a different perspective on being a mother. She learned that love speaks louder than anger and that some things are not worth the fight. It’s a grandmother’s wisdom – and I hope and pray that I listened enough to take those lessons so hard learned to heart. When mum and dad found out last year that the cancer was terminal, that the cancer that we had hoped, prayed and believed was defeated had come back. She knew where she was going, and that she would see Wilder, my brother, again. That she would fight as hard as she…

At that moment, I realize once she arrives she will be completely dependent on me.…

When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…

My name goes way back to my great grandma Luci. My mom and great grandma were very close. You could say they were always together. My great grandma passed away when I was in the 4th grade and she didn’t live here in Hawaii, so I didn't really see her much. My mom always use to tell me little stories about things they would do, like gardening, shopping in the city, cooking, etc. My mom says I’m very much like her in little ways. Is it because I’m named after her? I have a couple of memories with her one of them was when I was maybe around two years old and we were at her old home sweeping her porch and petting the little kittens as they walked by. Then I would jump on her bed and my great grandpa would yell at me and threaten me and she would…

While I was at boarding school, my grandmother (Nana) had a heart attack. Although she is recovering gradually, her condition worried our entire family and urged me to apply to Paideia to be able to visit her more frequently. During my summer vacation, I got the opportunity to visit her for the first time in a year, but upon entering the room, I realized that she did not seem to be my Nana anymore. Her chubby body was now gone and replaced with skin and bones that horrified me because I respected her so much. I could not even recognize her after her heart attack because of the dramatic weight loss that followed. I had to relive all of our memories together in order to feel anything toward her other than shock. It horrified me how much had changed…

As time went on, my grandmother's already unstable health was getting worse. Even more so after my mother was laid off of her job in 2008. From that time forward leading up to my grandmothers death was a drastic change in lifestyle and mindset for me. For nearly four years I helped care for her in every way possible. It did not help she never wanted to discuss arrangements after she was gone. Although, I don’t blame her. This is why I wonder if she died at peace. She knew just as much about her state of being as we did. It would be nice to know if her soul is at rest.…

After our loving 56 year-old father suffered in the hospital for almost two months, survived from gall bladder operation but died of stroke a year ago, his body was sent back to us wrapped with his own blanket. I admit it was really hard to accept because it was beyond our expectations. But I don’t like to think of him that way. Instead, I like to dwell on a frozen picture of him with me during happy moments- the day we marched when I graduated in elementary, to high school and even college. I even had a video of him on my phone last Christmas of 2011 when he was dancing and laughing with my youngest son and the moment we surprised him to blow the candle on his birthday cake last April 15. These are the pictures I bring to mind when I think of my father: he is laughing with his head thrown back, surrounded by mom and his grandchildren.…
