I have learned from my own mistakes, but in making them, I now better relate to the difficulties Wooden faced and recognize how remarkable his efforts were in overcoming the many obstacles he encountered during his lifetime. I revisit his story to remind myself of the importance of considering the many dimensions of people in both professional and personal relationships. "From an early age, I always had role models in my life who drilled into me the importance of a strong work ethic and to always focus on what I do best. I grew up watching with admiration as my late father, Robert Schnatter, and my late grandfather, ‘Papaw' Ackerson, handled their business and respective legal careers with fierce determination. No matter how much they sometimes struggled, they never gave up, and that taught me a lot about business and life.…

His wife and 3 sons were also involved in the business and all had their respective roles. His youngest son Robert, who was a busboy took more interest in the restaurant and became involved with it. At first he started serving tables, and then later started managing the restaurant on Saturday nights. Not only did his shift crew trust and respect him, but they also helped him by working extra hours to prepare the restaurant for opening. Robert’s ambition to stay in the restaurant business led him to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. During his freshman year he started dating a young lady named Sylvia. She was also interested in the restaurant business and started sticking around to help out at the restaurant. At the same time, she also reported to Emile and his wife whatever happened in the restaurant between the customers and the staff and made fun out of the situation. Later during the year as the clientele increased, Emile decided to hire Sylvia full time. As a salaried employee now, her attitude at work changed as she felt more responsible for what was happening around her and she didn’t find the amusing anecdotes funny anymore. Robert followed suit and…

This makes his job fulfilling for him, even though he is still trying to improve the relationship between him and his boss. That he believes that his superior knows that the better the atmosphere is in the workplace, the more his employees will want to stay, work harder, and also enjoy coming to work instead of it just feeling like a job. He then told me when I asked is anyone positively affected by his work that he hopes so. That the work benefits many people on paper, but he cannot see the results or “fruits of his labor” quite as easy as everyone else can. This along with his manager not being regarded as being the friendliest or outgoing person in the firm gives him a kind of empty feeling inside. He explained to me that he is not the only person on his job who he feels this way. That no matter how hard he works, his boss just sees him and his associates as employees. He then said that he does not expect a warm welcome from his boss everyday due to the high level of amount of work that needs to be completed every week. However, he does wish that the workplace environment he is in would one day become as enjoyable as the work he takes in. When I told him about Lencioni’s definition of anonymity, he then became so interested with my questions that he wanted to buy my book. This was a very rewarding experience for…

Within 6 months of his hiring, Bob developed what Jess considers to be poor work habits (e.g., very long lunches and coffee breaks, tardiness, absenteeism). Bob demonstrates little interest in or enthusiasm for his work. Although he generally accomplishes, at least in a minimal manner, those tasks that are directly assigned to him, he rarely volunteers ideas or takes the initiative. From Jess’s perspective, employees who take initiative and demonstrate creativity are critical in helping the unit to establish itself politically and to create a service where none had existed before.…

Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) was a German mathematician, logician, and philosopher who worked at the University of Jena. Frege essentially reconceived the discipline of logic by constructing a formal system which, in effect, constituted the first ‘predicate calculus’. In this formal system, Frege developed an analysis of quantified statements and formalized the notion of a ‘proof’ in terms that are still accepted today. Frege then demonstrated that one could use his system to resolve theoretical mathematical statements in terms of simpler logical and mathematical notions. One of the axioms that Frege later added to his system, in the attempt to derive significant parts of mathematics from logic, proved to be inconsistent. Nevertheless, his definitions (of the predecessor relation and of the concept of natural number) and methods (for deriving the axioms of number theory) constituted a significant advance. To ground his views about the relationship of logic and mathematics, Frege conceived a comprehensive philosophy of language that many philosophers still find insightful. However, his lifelong project, of showing that mathematics was reducible to logic, was not successful.…
